Asking Questions

I think we all remember when we were first time winter sowers and all the questions we had that needed answers. Maybe we came here from another forum or site. Maybe we missed the FAQ link and needed to be directed there. Maybe we poured over the FAQ and still didn't understand because, who knows...it doesn't matter, we still had questions. Maybe we read all the postings for days and weeks and some of us months (I lurked over a year before posting). Maybe we tried a search but didn't find the info or were overwhelmed with all the links listed. Maybe we just needed a little confidence builder. Maybe today we are just too busy, too tired or too something and ask because it is quick and we have been encouraged to ask questions.

So we ask (even those of us that have done this for years still have questions) and appreciate those who take the time and have patience with answering questions that may have been asked over and over again.

Sometimes we may get our feelings hurt by someone's response. We might be too sensitive or the other may have not been sensitive enough, or impatient, or just trying to help and we took it wrong.

So, please ask and remember that we are a friendly bunch and do not mean to hurt anyone's feelings. We are not face to face to read each other's faces and body language, to say I'm sorry I didn't mean it that way, to know that the other person's life is complicated and stressed today, to laugh it off and continue the conversation.

We all have the same goal, to be good winter sowers and enjoy this wonderful and easy way to enhance our gardens and our lives.

Keep asking those questions. It means I don't have to!

Questions are the way people learn, and there is nothing wrong with that! That's one of the reasons I absolutely LOVE this forum. People are always so helpful and there are things that can be confusing even after reading the FAQ. I remember how confused I was when people said when it got warm out they took the tops of the jugs off. I didn't know if they meant the "cap" or the top half, so people always could use a little clarification from time to time.

    Great post mnwsgal,

I think too that the search results can be particularly overwhelming and confusing if the 'right' Search Box for the forum is not used.

There are presently 3 search boxes...one in the Green Banner at the top of the page, one at the very bottom of the page, and one found just below the list of threads here on page one. The Search Box just below the list of threads here on page one, is the only box that will yield results for just the Winter Sowing Forum. The other 2 boxes will yield results for all of the Garden Web forums, many of which will not be very pertinent at all.

I agree with CA...I learn from other's questions.

Mnwsgal - itÂs almost as tho this post was written for me. Everything reason you gave for asking questions touched on things I've been experiencing lately.

And the funny thing is -- as crazy as it may sound -- until today I had not realized there WAS a specific WS forumÂ.duhhh. Without going into great detail, IÂd been Âstuck in just one particular post that I originally got linked to with regards to beautiful cottage gardens. I got so hooked on it that I made it a FAVORITE so I could just click and go there. So all this time IÂd been asking questions in just that one post.

There I was, asking away and being patiently answered by all you nice folk when IÂm sure many of my questions were already being discussed elsewhere. Thankfully, today someone suggested checking in the WS Forum. Eureka !!

So here I am !! And since the subject of this post was "Asking Questions", obviously it was the first one I clicked on to. So I just wanted to say, I was delighted to find your eloquently written sentiments and thank you for taking the time to put it into words.

AND THANKS SUE !!! for pointing out that bottom search box. Getting results from the entire GW site has been a great source of frustration for me so IÂll try THAT one next time :)

I've read lots of forums and for the money (Free, though it is) you can't beat this and the cottage garden forum. People offer advice knowing that situations can change seedling growth, germination, and even colors of plants. Unlike some forums (like those over in the mulch/soil area), no one here claims to KNOW everything. Most of us are doing things from experience with the understanding that someone else may have another way that works for them. There is no right or wrong way to wintersow. There are only a few rules. Drainage, viable seeds, proper planting time for your zone. Aside from that, it's about watching some lifeless bit of matter turn into a beautiful plant and reseed for the next year. At least that's how it is for me. I'm no expert, just a guy that likes to play in dirt with his seeds.

Hi Laura ~ no, I have not started yet but am ready to. Have been collecting containers and (now that I know about the rest of this forumÂha ha ha) have just been reading a new post about "Where do you do your WSing, kitchen, garage?" which was very helpful, since IÂd sort of stalled out, wondering how in the world I was going to do it in my tiny house. ItÂs a really interesting post!!

Thanks so much for the seed offer. I feel special :) By now, hopefully youÂve received my email !!

I love garden web. I have been here for about four years on and off and asked lots of good questions, and lots of silly ones. I think some of the old timers might want to remember that for a newcomer this site can be overwhelming and even a little confusing. I think it's nice to direct people to the FAQ's, but I don't get impatient with people who asked questions that have been asked over and over because many people are busy and only have a limited amount of time to get the answers they need. I consider myself a newbie and it makes me happy to be able to answer a question that might seem mundane to others. It might drive you crazy to answer "what is winter sowing?" for the umpteenth hundred time but some of us who've only done it for a year or so are ecstatic to have the opportunity to entice another potential winter sowing candidate. So let us have them and you can spend your time on those more difficult to answer unique questions. :)

I have to say too that this is the most friendly forum I have ever been on. There have always been a few snooty pants who have something nasty to say to my questions, but that's just life. You have to wonder what kind of person has to rain on a total strangers parade to be nasty in a forum like this. But really that is very, very rare here. :)

On this forum, we just like to talk about how big our "jugs" are.
