Topping & Pruning

Just wondered about doing these things. I know you shouldn't top trees, but have learned this after doing it to a couple of our younger maples.

So, if this has been done & 1 maple looks good, but has many leaders coming out from the cut area, should we leave alone then ?

Another maples top was like a Y so, I did cut 1 of the limbs of, but looks not so good now.

Another big maple 30' (woods maple & was here)was topped or broke in half by winds last Fall so, has a clean cut where it broke & now shoots are coming out on the tree. How to allow to grow a new top ?

Another tree in the yard is a redbud & has it's main trunk, but when you get to the first 2 branches it's a Y, but if you prune the Y, you will have half a tree. What to do ?

I just have now been looking for Y's in trees & if possible, cut.

Not sure we are doing this right & wanted to ask. I can post some pics of the maples & redbud if needed to give you an idea once the nice rain here stops.

Just want nice older good looking trees & want to prune them up right while younger. Want to do the right thing & learn how to do this correct.

~Thanks~
