Stanley mower, Peerless 2000 transaxle SLOW

I have 2 identical Stanley 19hp lawn tractors. One of them I bought a few years ago and it works great. The other one I was given by a friend who bought it at the same time but it has developed a problem where it will move under it's own power, but it is very slow. He was told by his mower repairman that the transaxle was shot so he bought a new machine and gave me this one, ostensibly for parts for mine. I got it home, cleaned it up, put fresh gas in it, and it started right up and ran good. I pressed the pedal and it did go but it is much slower than mine and it doesn't engage sharply but just kinda takes off gradually. Also, on mine, when you let off the pedal, it stops immediately. This one keeps on rolling. The speed is pretty much the same forward or reverse.

It's too good of a mower to part out, I mowed with it for about a half hour thinking the trans would get hot and stop but it just kept plugging along at the same speed. So I want to try to fix it.

OK, after all that, my question is, where to I check the oil level in the pump? I have searched for a plug on the top but I don't find one. There is what looks like a vent tube about 4" long which goes into a rubber grommet on top, is this where I check and add fluid? The hole is only about 3/8" unless I pull out the grommet, which would make it about 5/8" roughly. If the fluid level is good, I want to change it. What else should I look for?

TIA for any help.

    jas88,

    Sure (?) it's a Peerless 2000 series? Is there a square
metal plate on the back of the transaxle? The 2000 series
has a separate pump module attached to a separate gear drive
differential. There is a rubber fill plug in the top of the
case. I'd suck out as much of the "old oil" as you can, and
refill with 20W50 full-synthetic. If the case is dry, it
will take approx 2 qts to re-fill. There's NO dipstick, so
NO WAY of measuring the oil level. Peerless has not said
what FULL capacity is, SO...we don't know? If this unit does
have the square plate on the back...get a part# 799030 oil
and bellows kit and this will "rejuvenate" this tired old
girl. Ultimately (and unfortunately) if it's the newer style
    2000 series LTH....you may need a new pump module...approx.
$225. FYI....the gear side (differential) uses 80/90W gear
oil (16 ozs) to fill it. There is NO WAY to drain the oil
unless you take the cases apart, OR...drill a hole in the
bottom of the case. Don't want to do the latter.

T-Man, thanks for your reply, I don't see a square metal plate on the back but there is a sticker on the axle part that says "PEERLESS-2000-002A". The pump is a separate box setting to the right and forward of the axle. Isn't that a 2000? The only hole on top I can see is not a plug but a grommet with a vent tube about 4" long sticking out of it - is this also the fill hole? Looking down from the top, this hole is in the forward-right corner of the pump. Since we don't know what the correct fluid level should be, I am thinking I can make a dipstick and check the fluid in my good working mower and then compare that to the one I am trying to fix. What do you think?

Checked the oil level against my good tractor and it is fine, oil looks like brand new. I guess the pump is toast?
