What is your your pH now? What do you want to raise it to?

I realize home kits are not the most reliable but that indicated at least 5 maybe lower. The test kit only went to 5 and it was the darkest color on the scale indicating low pH. The plants that are doing well in the garden thrive in very acidic soils (Coreopsis in particular) but the ones that need more neutral soils are suffering so I think this confirms the initial test of acidic soil. I have heavy clay soil which I amended for drainage but (not well enough it seems but that is another issue) and am hoping to bring the pH closer to 6 to 6.5 for the plants that need it (Delphiniums, Geum, Coneflowers, Scabiosa). These are already planted into the ground, some for over a year. Thanks for your help.

While chalk is limestone whether what you propose would really do any good or not will depend on how much lime you need to add to make a change. What you really need to do is contact your local office of the North Carolina State University USDA Cooperative Extension Service and have a good, reliable soil tgest done and they will tell you how much, and which kind of, lime to add to do what you want, no guessing involved.
