Oh I should add that this bin will be out on the patio. Not indoors.

A dark container will heat up better, but you will be able to see the process better, try it and if its not heating to what you need consider painting it. I rebuilt my tumbler but let the metal bare and shiny and it still heats up. The process itself will cause the heat. Adding worms to this set up may fry them.

The color or opaqueness have nothing to do with the compost heating up, that is a function of of bacterial activity. Compost that gets no sun at all will still heat up, providing the mix is close to the 30:1 that is optimal, the moisture is right, and the volume, the mass, is close to enough. I'm not all that sure the mass of that tub would be sufficient to get the bacteria that will generate the heat that busy. I'm also not sure that you could get enough holes drilled in that tub to provide the amount of air those bacteria need.

after careful considering, i decided i may need worms so i bought an opaque one yesterday to get started on a worm bin. In general is more holes always better for ventilation? Thanks again!
