zone 5 has sprouts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It finally has hit the low forties today here in northern Nevada and the snow has melted off my jugs so I went to take a peek. My allysum has green!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know we will have more snow, but I also know the allysum can handle it so I am excited that I actually have something to look at besides snow and dirt!

Congrats. Nothing here yet and we had a week of high 40s. Of course they'd just die when it goes down in the teens this weekend. Hurry up spring.

Congratulations! We haven't been out of the thirties yet, and it's snowing again, so I'm not even checking mine yet, but it should only be three or four more weeks before the lettuces start sprouting here.

Congratulations!!! if you can bring them through. I hope none of mine sprout yet, as they'll surely get killed when we have more hard freezes even if it did get into the 40's a couple days, been much colder lately.

Mine don't stay snow covered for too long, but it's snowing again which provides insulation but it will melt off.

I have never had allysum die from freezes or snow. It just continues growing so I am not too worried about it. Normally it doesn't sprout until the first week of February here but I'm not complaining. It just makes me want to go sow more.

I'm sure all mine in the ground is dead out there. I'll WS some of mine, also found an interesting purple (think it says blue but trust me, it'll be purple pic looks purple) one but don't expect it to be as robust as the white. I'm surprised yours doesn't freeze though. The only other I WS'ed was in early Feb 2 yrs ago, it sprouted pretty well but can't remember when, should keep a journal.

I am putting on the label the name and date I WS.

    Congrats on the sprouts!

I don't/won't even start looking for sprouts until sometime mid April usually.

Allysum is always my first sprout which is why every newbie should grow it! The one that sprouted is carpet of snow which fits since there is still snow on the ground. It looks so nice in the edges of my window boxes and planters.

Yay! My purple alyssum has their little roots out as of today which means by Tuesday I will have green in that container as well! My other alyssum has so far survived out snow/hail/rain/freezing temps. Some of the babies are a little yellow from all the precipitation but they will green up soon.

I just Sowed the last of my alyssum seeds. some basket of gold and the white kind. I am so excited to try alyssum!

I hope it sprouts for me too cause I sowed a lot of it!

Alyssum is one of my "must haves" every year. Partly because of being able to see the early green, but mostly because it makes the edges of my containers look great. It just flows right on over the sides and make the containers look so much bigger!

Congrats gardenluv! I haven't started my wsowing yet. LOL. :)

    gardenluv,
how are they doing? I have no sprouts :( so I'm living vicariously through your eyes. (sigh)
I keep checking my alyssums and nothing yet.
I want to line my driveway with them. One of my favorite honeybee magnets.

They are doing good. Some are still a little yellow from lack of sun or too much water, but they should green up soon. Hopefully we will get some sun this week.

Yikes! I have one sprout of Dianthus Maiden pinks and one sprout of Carnation Chabaud Giant red. I am not worried about the dianthus, but the carnation sprout kinda worries me. The package says perennial but.....fingers crossed it does okay and that the rest of the seeds stay tucked in their bed a little while longer! The alyssum is greening up. Today is the first day we actually saw the sun in quite some time. Next week it will actually be in the fifties so I am sure I will see many more sprouts soon. Any other zone 5ers with sprouts?

I definitely have "sprout envy" to go with my 3 feet of snow...

I'm so glad you posted this, it's my first time WSing, and I dutifully checked the back of the Alyssum container I'd inherited...I thought it was a non-hardy annual. :) thanks for setting me straight, I just check it again.

Any idea if 2006 Alyssum set in a 'row tape" will WS ok? I am not going to sow rows of Alyssum.

    :)

How are your sprouts doing? It is really cold here and we still have snow on the ground :)

I have not checked for sprouts but your post makes me want to go take a look...

I still have more sowing to do so I am not ready for spring yet. I can't believe I just said that!

My sprouts are doing good. The alyssum is greening up, and I haven't lost any yet. The sun actually came out for a couple of hours the last couple of days, and the rain/snow has stopped for a while. Last week we were in the high twenties and today we are supposed to be close to fifties with more to come! I am guessing in the next week I will have a lot more babies sprouting. The only one that worries me is the carnation sprout. I don't think I have ever read of anyone growing carnations on this forum so I have no clue how they will do when it starts snowing again.

Knowing that you had sprouts two weeks ago, I finally caved in and checked my jugs, even though the forecast is calling for snow tonight and tomorrow. Nothing yet, but our highs are still in the mid to upper 30's. I think as soon as we start getting above that 40º mark, the lettuces will sprout.

I am soooooo ready for spring this year!

Woo Hoo! Jug #22 English Daisy Double Mixed Colors has one little baby sprout in it! That's 5/27 jugs germinating. Not too shabby for it being only half way through February! I think I should sow some more today! I LOVE SEEING GREEN!!!!!

    Congrats!
I hope mine haven't sprouted, though. :p They are under a foot of snow. And I still have a lot more to sow. :P

I almost tried to check mine but most are covered with snow so no luck...

I am glad the alyssum is still ok. I sowed a lot of alyssum this year!

I too have more to sow!

Right now we don't have any snow on the ground, and it is warming up for the week. We always have one week in February that is nice and warm. It is just a tease though. We are bound to have more snow in the future.

    gardenluv,
    I'm sooo jealous! lol.
I don't have sprouts BUT my lilac buds look like they're starting to swell.
It might be wishful thinking, but they do look different! I think.
    come on Spring!
    :) Laura

My tulips have started to pop up. Last year they had just began to form their little buds when they froze and died. This year I am prepared and will cover them on nights where it is supposed to snow or freeze. That is what makes this one week so hard. I get so excited about the warm weather even though I know it will not last and there will be more snow.

oh gosh, every time I come to this thread - I am reminded I want to plant some allysum, so *I* can have sprouts.

I must remember today to get some seeds. Last time I went to one of the box garden stores, allysum was 2.50 a pack.
I know I can find them cheaper!
got to try those dollar stores.

    ellen

I always get my alyssum at Walmart for a dollar. I'm sure they have it at other places for cheaper. It is always a must have for me.

My snapdragons have emerged! Woo Hoo! So far that is 6 out of 29....not too shabby so far. 20% germination (jug wise)in February is pretty darn good to me!

Okay, now you're just bragging, LOL!

Even though I don't have sprouts yet, the snow has melted off the main perennial bed in the front of the house, and I can see a tiny bit of green at the base of a few of them, so I have hope today : )

Jug #24 Dianthus Siberian Blues f/littleonefb has two baby sprouts as of today!!!!

    That's it!!!, I've had enough!!!,
I'm coming over and stealing some of your jugs! I'll be real sneaky and stick in my lazy jugs. lol
    Jealousy rears it's ugly head.

I really do love your posts!!!!
Gives me a reason to brush away the snow and peek into mine. Still nothing:(
    WAAAH! :(

    :) Laura

Well, it has been like spring here for the last week. Starting Sunday it will be back to cold and snow. I'm not too worried about my sprouts, except for the english daisy and the carnation. I figure if they die, not all of them germinated yet so hopefully the rest will be fine.

Auntyara - come on over!!! Nobody else in Nevada (that I know of) wintersows so I would be willing to part with some of my jugs to meet you! Let me know when you are coming and I will put a pot of coffee on, or buy some champagne to celebrate or whatever you want!

    Oh gosh darn it'!,
I live in N.Y. Don't put the champagne on ice yet. cause I'm walking.
    LOL
    But thanks for the invite!
    :) Laura

Well, enjoy your walk! Don't walk on the side of the highways when it is dark outside! That's not very safe lol.

I have more as of today! Seeds I snatched at my mom's house (I think it is foxglove), more maiden pinks, and my freckles romaine lettuce! Woo Hoo! That's 33% of my jugs with sprouts in it! I guess I need to get sowing!

So.....with 10 jugs that have lots of sprouts in it, we were supposed to get up to two inches of snow tonight. In the back of my mind I thought, yeah right! Did I cover my jugs? Nooooooo. Did I protect them in any way shape or form? Nooooooo. Well, it is supposed to snow until midnight. Right now it is only 8:30 and we have 5 (I repeat 5) flippin freezing cold miserable inches of stupid stupid snow.

Yikes. I want to run out and get my jugs but oh well. I'm not going out in that. If they don't survive I can always replant the jugs. Some I'm not worried about, others well..........

So my jugs have finally been uncovered from the snow. I didn't lose any AND I have even more now!

I have one sprout of shasta daisy, and one sprout of mexican hats. That's 12/29 jugs! I think that it's a total fluke that I have that many and it is still February but I am sooo not complaining. The more that sprout, the more I want to sow.

    GL.
I just love reading this thread!
I don't always comment, but I do always smile. Even though I'm jealous LOL, I'm happy for you!
I remember having a mild winter a few years ago. It was great.
    :)Laura

Everytime you post about getting more sprouts, it makes me want to run out and check those jugs again!

Last year, I had sprouts by 2/21, so it doesn't seem unrealistic that I could see green, except for the fact that the snow cover was gone by this time last year, and there are still piles of it everywhere. Instead of 6 weeks of snow cover like last year, we are on week 12!!!

The fact that some of the jugs were actually frozen to the patio, should have been my first indicator that I wasn't going to find any sprouts today, LOL.

I'm glad yours survived the big snow last week!

    Bonnie

Me too Bonnie! We are in for another big storm (supposedly) tomorrow with 1-2' (which probably means a dusting). I now have no worries that they will pull through that too. Our weathermen got their experience online I think because they have been WAY off so far this year. I was absolutely amazed though that I had more sprouts while they were covered in snow! Never thought I would see that!
