tec ohv16 lifter

Anyone, Walt, ...
Recently got a ariens 1640h given to me that had no compression. Took the head of and the exhaust seat was out and holding the valve open. Peened it back into place, put the head back on and cleaned out all the plugged up fins. Engine started right up and seemed to run ok until I put a load on it and then it would die. Took the valve cover off and found the the exhaust push rod was out of place and got the piston up to TDC to reset the valve lash but couldn't get the push rod to sit correctly so took the head off and found the lifter was stuck in the up position. Got a punch and gave it a tap and it freed up and seemed to work so put it back together and fired it up and same thing happened.
So, question is, knowing the seat probably came out due to overheating, could the overheating cause the lifter to stick, and , are there any recommendations for fixing and preventing this?
Thanks in advance,
JBH
