Suckers

I have several crabapple trees and another tree that I think is a basswood. All have suckers that I keep cutting as close to the ground as possible. The basswood also has shallow roots and suckers are growing from the roots and all around the tree and are now five feet tall - it's so bad it almost looks like a hedge of suckers. I have a product called Vine-X which is systemic that I could paint on each cut (which would take me all summer) but I'm wondering if there is another solution. I realize they are suckering because they were never pruned or improperly pruned - they're all 20 years old. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. The nurseries are not much help.
