Newbie?

I live in central NJ and I would like to try and winter sow this year. I need some help. We are thinking some veggies like tomatoes, squash, eggplant, broccoli and cauliflower. Maybe artichokes too.

We would like to try some annuals also like petunias and maybe pansies.

When would be a good time to start? Is it too early for vegetables?

Thanks for your help.

Alright! So glad you've come to visit us, hogan nj!
    Welcome! Welcome!

Have you read the Winter Sowing FAQ yet? You'll get a lot of answers there.
I have not sown any vegetables yet. Let's hear from others, because I am not very experienced in sowing veggies.
You can sow Petunia and pansies sometime this month on.
I plan to sow mine in a few weeks or early March.

Welcome, still feel like a newbie even though it's 2 yrs now. It's because I still have so much to learn. I've not done any veggies for years now so can't help with that, have read posts about different ones, will sow indoors a few toms and peppers, don't have room for a veg garden plus flowers, but always wanted rhubarb, so got some seeds. Most people get theirs by divisions.

My son was just here, can't see what's out there, but he was kind of interested, said he'd take a lot of extra plants off my hands and plant them. Great! Just so they don't go to waste.

I worked out my own methods for spring sowing earlier than you can plant in the ground outdoors, then found out about winter sowing.

I WS'ed a bunch of my pansies already. Maybe it was too soon but I don't see what difference it makes. These are supposed to self sow. Planted one pkt of petunias and held one back. Those self sow, too, so why not?

Some seeds you get more than you ever need and others, the expensive ones, not enough for insurance against failure.

I read the FAQ page and i did not find anything about when to start sowing vegetables in zone 6. Can anyone advise me on when to start?

zone 6 here ---- I've only done cauliflower and tomatoes from your list. Cauliflower can be started now (broccoli too, I would think). I usually start toms in March.

I'm thinking of doing some eggplant this year, and plan on doing them in March-April, depending on how the weather goes - they need more warmth, I believe.

Squash might depend on what type you're planting, but March might be a good time for those as well.

Welcome! You can (and probably should) sow cool-season veggies right away. They need time to mature before it gets too hot. You will want to plant the sprouts out well before your last frost.

Cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, spinach - all those are cool season crops. Your tomatoes, peppers, squash, etc. are warm season crops. They won't take frost and you can wait a little longer to ws them if you want. Wintersown.org has some great info on ws tomatoes. If you are unsure what is a cool-season and what is a warm-season veggie, check out the University of Tennessee publications. You can download for free. They give planting dates for direct sowing, as I recall - part of east TN is zone 6, so there shouldn't be too much difference in zone.
