Labeling mistake?

Did I goof already? Being a first timer, I just numbered top and bottom of containers then kept a log of what was in each number. I didn't put a label in it but am reading that you do. I used a paint pen for the numbers. I don't want to dig them out of the snow and label now if I don't have to.

Thanks

Judi

    Hi,

I think you are fine - everybody has their own way of doing things. The most important thing is to keep track of what is planted in each jug/container and it seems you have that under control. Last year I used the date stamps on the milk jugs as my numbering system and logged everything according to this stamped number. I also lined my jugs up in the order they where planted and this matched up with the order on my log. However this year I decided to go ahead and write the names on the jugs with a sharpie (yes I hear they fade) only because I like to readily be able to tell what is in a jug once the sprouts start to appear without having to have my log in hand. If for some reason I can't read the jug I can always go look it up on my log so no real worries about them fading. Oh I also write the name of my seeds on a tiny piece of paper, fold it in half and tape it to the outside of the jug with duct tape. The tape completely covers the paper so no sun or moisture can get to it.

One other thing if your log is only a computer file you might want to do a backup just in cause something goofy happens to your computer. Losing computer files is no fun at all. Fortunately my husband is great at recovering files from a crashed hard drive - though I make sure to do backups.

Your method is fine. Several others label that way. The only disadvantage I can think of, would be if you were outside just checking on your containers/seedlings and you had to go back in for your log book to see which ones were sprouting. If it works for you, and it should, I don't see a problem at all.

Stlgirl, are you kidding? Nothing important (except my pics) go on the computer. I hate this thing! If it wasn't for GW I wouldn't have one. Anyhow, thanks for making me feel better about how I did it.

Ah, my DH and I can both be computers nerds at times. I have a whole excel spreadsheet which includes height, color, light & water requirements, and bloom time for every seed I am sowing. I am using this to help me plan where to plant what in my gardens. Anyway... glad my words helped you feel better about your labeling method.
