Sucker on mini?

Is it possible to have a sucker on a mini or semi mini? I am very new to Av's and recently purchased my first mini, which may be a semi mini according to a knowledgeable bystander. It has two or three very small stems at the base; originally, it was nice and flat, but with the recent change in light, now has spaces between the stems and is growing somewhat erratically. I noticed the small stems yesterday and read the FAQ here, but didn't know if these stems are part of this very small plant, or a sucker. I guess it wouldn't hurt to clip the two or three stems just to be on the safe side, but would like to know for future reference about suckers and mini's. Any feedback appreciated!
