veggies - when?

I've noticed lots of posts about when to sow vegetables. Can you please explain the dangers of sowing too early? Reason being, every year I get tomatoes, squash, pumpkins that re-seed from compost, that have naturally spent the entire winter outside, and they do just fine!

Hi,
I get things growing in my compost too.
BUT I throw in 100's if not 1000's of,... lets say pumpkin seeds in there and get about 30 sprouts? Not good enough odds for something I really want.lol.
I'm totally wording this wrong but you get what I mean. :)
I'm waiting til May my self.

I think maybe people worry about some seeds rotting. A lot of veggie seeds will not sprout until the temps have warmed up in spring so there is really no hurry to get them sown right away.
