Newbie Seed Project

Looks like the search function isn't working because I couldn't find my old thread. Anyhow, we're up to 1,350 packs of seeds in the hands of about 120 newbies.

But, there is still more seed to be sent out thanks to our generous donors. Who needs seed? I want an EMPTY seed box at the end of this project and then I can put together my report which should be fun.

You don't have to be a newbie to get seed. Just perhaps new to growing from seed. Reason is that some of these seeds are quite basic, but fun to grow and an experienced seedie will no doubt have tried them already.

    Bakemom,
This is my first year doing actual winter sowing (tried a few things when I found the forum early last summer with mixed results). I would love some seeds. I too will email you directly. Thanks!

I'm a newbie too, first year ws and I would love some seeds to add to my collection. Thank you so much for sharing.

I'm a newbie as well! I'll help you empty out your seed box!

I have responded to all I was able to. If you haven't heard from me, your email is blocked.

    Hi Bakemom,

What a wonderful project! Winter sowing is the greatest! I've been lurking but haven't started sowing yet. This is my second year and I would love some seeds. I missed out on the newbie project last year but did receive some seed packets from a generous member.

This is my first try at wintersowing. It sounds great! I have been lurking here for some time and would love to have some seeds. I saved some nicotiana last year I could share. it was purple and white and very fragrent.
We went from woodland to urban sun and it is like starting over. Thanks for your generous offer.

That's it for the Newbie Seed Project. If anyone wants to donate seeds it should probably be done in the next few days to ensure they get out this year. I will fulfill the wishes on this thread and then shut the project down and prepare my report. It should be fun to see where everything went and how response fared.

Let me know if you plan to donate! Thanks to the other generous donors on this forum!

I'm a 2nd year gardener, 1st year winter-sower. I'm doing pretty well with veggies, but have almost no flower seeds. I'm not sure how this works, but I'd love to try anthing that'll grow in zone 5.

If you happen to get more seeds and want to start this up again, let me know please.

Hi Bakemom! I sent you 3 emails, but never heard back from you. I am assuming you ran out of seeds before getting to all of the responses on this thread. My email through my member page should not be blocked but if it is, my direct email is bgpadios@juno.com

Thanks for all of your hard work!

Emily I don't see an e-mail on your page on GW but if you want to send me a SASBE I can get you started with some of my extra seeds. Let me know.

I'm tapped out right now and am just able to finish the ones I have received and are coming. The end result is about 1400 packs in the hands of 130+ noobs.

For anyone who has missed out, there are a bunch of SASBE offers on the main exchange. It looks like a lot of fun.

The BAD news is that my excel sheet that I was keeping on disk has failed and I can't read the disk. You might recall that my home computer died from a virus (PC On Call confirmed this on Monday) so I have been working from disk.
I am very disappointed to lose all my hard work. I wonder if anyone has any ideas. The dialog box says it's in a read-only mode or the server has failed. Huh? Can I save my spreadsheet? Going to get a new home computer soon. Am using my son's in the basement right now.

Bakemom, I am sorry to hear about your computer troubles, I am fortunate that my DH handles all the repairs/upgrades on ours. Just wanted to let you know I received your email. Please let me know if you receive my reply.

    Thanks, Bonnie

Thanks to more generous donations, I have at least 5 more packs ready for newbies in addition to the ones that are on their way. Post here and unblock your email and I will get right back to you.

i would be interested. i just discovered this this morning (really newbie!) and planted 4 milk jugs we had in the recycling bin this afternoon.

    Thanks

I'm a newbie and have never tried winter sowing but I'm going to get started this weekend. Any flower seeds would be appreciated.
I'll send you an email with my address.

    Thanks

Please let me know if you need more seeds. I can donate some. Thanks.

I just received my Newbie seed pack, and was completely blown away!!! There was tons of great stuff in there, some were seeds I'm not familiar with, but am looking forward to learning about.

I just want to say a big "Thank You" to Bakemom for all of the hard work, and to all the WS'ers that donated seeds to help us Newbies out.

Guess I had better go buy my DH some more soda ... I'm going to need more containers, LOL!

Bonnie (with big smile on her face)

I would also like to say "Thank You" to Bakemom and all of the generous members who donated seed. I received my envelope stuffed with seeds. There are several that I have never grown, Winter Sown or otherwise. I can't wait to get them sown. This is my second year Winter Sowing and I just love it. This forum and its members are the greatest! Even though I don't post much, I love reading all of the posts and learning new things.

    Pat : )

Bakemom, do you have any more seeds? I'm a newbie in zone 4. I've collected some basics, but would be interested in any unusual seeds you could share. Hopefully next year I'll be able to give back! I'll send you an e-mail if I see you post back to this. Thanks much!!

I got a bakemon newbie pack a few months ago and it was all down hill from there. You too will soon become a seed hoarder, if you've not turned into one already.

darlababy, your email is blocked and there is no link from your member page. So, I hope you see this and email me. A pack is ready and waiting for you!

There have been a bunch of donors this year that really made the seed selection all that more interesting. It's a lot of fun!

bakemom, got the veggies yesterday. Thank you so much. You really didn't have to do that. But I appreciate it. lol

    Thanks again,
    stacy

Thanks, Bakemom! I appreciate your generosity! Sending you an e-mail....

The seeds are flying through the mail. All envelopes received have left the building within 18 hours of receipt!

A reminder to noobs (everyone makes mistakes at first): SASBE stands for a BUBBLE envelope. We use bubble envelopes in order to insure that the package is hand cancelled and that the seeds do not get crushed going through the rollers. It costs .52 to send an empty envelope. I usually recommend 2 .39 stamps for the return trip.

Also, if you want to use two envelopes (some folks do although only one is necessary) you only need ONE bubble mailer for the return trip. There is no need to bubble wrap an empty bubble mailer.

Also, the USPS does not accept stamps that are taped on. Although some have slipped through, I have seen some return if there is tape over the stamps. The reason? So the post office can cancel the stamps.

When I send out seeds from my own gardens, I email information about the plants. Because the seed going out right now is about 80% donations, I don't have information packs included in this offer. That was something I did last fall.

Enjoy your seeds - there are some really interesting donations that should be fun for experimentation.

There are now six more Newbie Seed Packs ready to go. Who wants them?

Remember, you can spring and summer sow too. It's a lot of fun!

I would love a pack, I just started some seeds today with my daughter. I may also be able to help with your spreadsheet problem. Email me and I will help you if I can

Thanks to our beloved Drippy, there are yet more seeds stuffed into the newbie seed packs. I have posted on the Main Exchange, but there are still more.

Who needs seeds? Remember, there is spring and summer sowing...

Hi, I participated as a newbie in the Winter Sowing Project and it was such fun. Most things germinated and I have more plants and varieties than I ever dreamed possible. I will be having lots of seeds starting soon. Is there a way I can contribute to the Newbie Project so that others can get a package the same way I did?

Many of us have SASBEs offered during the winter. Post a donor thread and I'm sure those seeds will have new homes soon! My own project was personal, not really official, and was a great deal of fun. It's not that much work really. I don't anticipate offering SASBEs from donations at this point, but come the fall, who knows?
