Hard to believe that all lower 48 states have snow! What's next Puerto Rico?

Thought we'd dodged the bullet when I came out of work last night at 11 and there was only a dusting and the roads were clear. Then I get up this morning at 7:30 and it's snowing fairly hard. This one wasn't called for here. And there might be more this weekend.

I share your arg, ellenr. :)

This week it is supposed to be in the high fifties, low sixties. On Sunday it is supposed to snow! This is the tease week. We always get one week in February where it is so nice outside......and then it snows. Every year. No exceptions. I knew it was coming, but I always hope that the nice weather will stick around, and then I am always disappointed when it doesn't. It is supposed to snow all next week. Boo! I am so ready for spring. I am going to have to cover all of my tulips. last year they grew, and as soon as they started to form buds it snowed and they died.

It has been 3 hours and token hasn't posted about how nice it is where he is. He must be busy!

Personally, I am done with the snow, like forever done with it!

It is supposed to be in the low 40's by the end of the week. With 2+ feet still on the ground. It looks like it will be April when we see the grass!

At least it's stopped snowing and the sun is out now!

At least the containers are watered. I keep telling myself that.

We got a small dusting after I sowed about a dozen containers this weekend.

I still have more to sow therefore I am not ready for spring just yet. I know that may seem crazy...lol

ellenr, I'm so sorry you have to put up with this. It's getting old. I mean it's pretty and all that but enough is enough.

We had just a little but the sun has melted it off, really nice today, supposed to get colder again, we'll get hit with more surely before spring, and I do like seeing my containers with a little covering.

I'd say I'm looking forward to spring, which I am, but then the work really begins, cleared part of the dead stuff off last fall and will need to do that first, but that's at least one of the easier chores.

    Yeah, some snow

That's not so pretty, is it? I don't know what you will get when it melts off, might have flooding in some places.

That much would make me feel claustrophobic.

I donÂt know about you guys but IÂm beginning to get a little stir crazy. I want to be outside doing something so badly, and everything is so frozen and dead. My perennials are all done and havenÂt started my annuals yet. But IÂm just curious, what are you folks doing to help pass the time while waiting for these dreary old cold days to pass? Any other hobbies? Quilting, watercolors, etc?

    .

    Claustrophobia - exactly!
I don't understand why snow on the ground should make me feel claustrophobic, but it does.

As for what else are we doing, I spend TOO much time on the computer! I try to get out once a day and walk.

I have a nice cafe in my area - do any of you have this - it is in 5 other cities in the US - called the Better World Cafe - they use sustainable practices, and local food, and have very reasonable prices, and have a free entree every day for those who can't afford to pay.

Also, most everyone I know in town is often there, at one time or another, so if I make it there I usually see someone I know.
Helps to break the isolation I am feeling due to this snow.

Also we have a new bookstore, opened by a friend of mine, also a congregating place for people.

Yes, the plow trucks were out again here Monday night into Tuesday.
The wood pile is getting smaller and smaller.
That groundhog just has to prove himself right every year, doesn't he?

stupid groundhog, someone should choke him!!

That's about all I'm doing, whiling away the time between my WS'ing sessions, on the computer, can't get myself motivated to do much of anything else but have to do a few things.

No, we don't have those restaurants, and if I go out which is seldom, do carryout. I've become too reclusive and avoid people although enjoy chatting with people who stop by while I'm working outside and a few family things.

I can't really say I've had cabin fever either, keep busy.

    Arrrg,
    Yesterday it was melting away...
Now It's BACK! 3 more days of snow. I don't even think it's pretty any more.
SN@W is a four letter word. lol

Yep, theyÂre calling for snow here tonight too - I was wondering why my legs were aching. And why those white patches were still lingering out back in the woods. They say when it lingers itÂs waiting around for more. I finally planted some peas in a pot out on the back porch - couldnÂt stand it, I needed to watch something sprout and grow. The little fellers are already reaching out with tendrils wanting to latch on to something.

I may be in the minority, but I was happy that we got more snow this week. All I have to do is look at the calendar to see that spring is still quite a ways away here. If it is going to be winter, let there be snow. I love a long lasting blanket of snow that gets topped off with a fresh dusting of wet snow every few days to keep it sticking to every branch of every tree and bright white.

I know it is not going to be warm or dry enough for me to do much of anything outside for at least a month. When there isn't snow here this time of year, it is still cold and everything is muddy and messy and drab. So, let there be snow.

A few years ago we had a nice warm late winter and early spring thaw, things were growing and beautiful for about a week. Then it got cold again and we had an ice storm that killed off a lot of those perennials, leaving the yard looking pretty bare that year. I also missed out on my spring bulbs putting on a show... they got covered in ice just as they were starting to open. A nice thick insulating snow blanket is a good thing. Just as long as it isn't 3+ feet deep, like some people had to deal with this year...that really does suck :)

Today we got layer after layer of snow and freezing rain. 10+" It's still not over yet. But the Good news, We're getting a Nor-Easter on Thursday. Aaarg!

"Sarcasm, Just one more service we offer!"

I actually have that phrase on a plaque in my kitchen. lol.
It was a gift from someone who was worried that they had insulted me. LOL.

We got a manageable amount 2 days ago, and when I was out, there was some lightly falling, not forecast to amount to much.

I'm thinking about shovelling some snow on the containers that may not have much, the longer the cover lasts, the better.

Front faces south, and even if temps haven't been above freezing, the sun has melted a lot of it in the yard, sidewalk and street that was plowed. Supposed to be low single digits for a couple of days at night. Then finally warm up to above freezing about the 1st of March.

auntyara, odd we're in the same zone and you seem to be getting more right now.

    aliska,
too much snow here in the Hudson Valley. Tomorrow is going to be even worse. Schools canceled til Monday.
    :)Laura

auntyara - I LOVE that plaque! It would fit in my kitchen perfectly. I too am sooooo sick of the snow. Last storm was supposed to be 2-4", and oops....did they mean 29" because that is what we got. Was supposed to snow last night, instead it rained (which I don't mind) since it helps melt the stupid snow. On Friday we are supposed to get 1-2'. I'm guessing we will get 2". The weathermen in our area were dropped on their heads as babies or something! At any rate, spring can come anytime now. I am SOOOOOO ready for it!

Two storms later I'm still grumbling. lol
Where I live is always right on the line,
eg tonite we're on the line between 3-6 and 6-18 inches.

Must be some geographical feature or meterological feature that puts us always on the line.

Haven't lost power yet (fingers crossed)

Hope everybody is snug and prepared.

I'm going out for a walk, haven't been out all day.
    It does not look inviting.

We are currently under a blizzard warning, winter storm warning and wind advisory. Expect to see upwards of two feet of snow by the time this thing moves out on Sunday.

I did tackle the jug prep today and decided I would plant somethings up. Well, after the weather advised what was coming, and since it hasn't stopped snowing all day, I just couldn't put my freshly sown seeds out in this weather. I can't imagine Winter Sowing referring the a winter like this. Seriously, I thought what a shock to go from indoors to some below zero temperature so quickly. Then there is the question of the wind kicking up pretty good tonite.

To top it off, finally, I was a little afraid that I might get out there trying to arrange the jugs and end up slipping and falling on my slick walkways.

Once again, nothing has been sown. I am still trying to figure out the veggie aspect and or exactly I can leave outside in this weather.

Hey, Ellen, guess what> More snow is heading your way again, if the meterologist are correct. I'm concerned as my niece lives in Rockaway and she and her family are headed to Baltimore to attend a Memorial service for our cousin Saturday afternoon. Knowing her, she'll wait till last minutes to leave after she gets off work at night.

    Hey Pippi,
you know what they say about the bearer of bad news? :)

I seem to not be paying much attention to the forecasts or I am in denial, I keep thinking it is over, and making plans, and then -like last night- someone tells me it isn't over it is just beginning!!... agg "tearing out hair>

    Tazebell -
re slipping on the ice - of course that is a good reason not to go out.
but re your newly-sown seeds - they can and should go out in the snow, if you can get out, and if you are
    wintersowing.
If they are sown, and it sounds like you are keeping the containers inside, they may begin to sprout if the temp. is warm - then you will not be wintersowing, but sowing seeds indoors.
If you cannot get out safely, I suggest putting your sown seeds in as cool a place as possible, an unheated garage for example.

RE: tazebell: "I just couldn't put my freshly sown seeds out in this weather. I can't imagine Winter Sowing referring the a winter like this. Seriously, I thought what a shock to go from indoors to some below zero temperature so quickly."

Oh, I RELISHED the job of getting the jugs sowed and outside during the START of more snow here in NW Iowa. In fact, my DH helped carry some of the jugs because it was snowing so hard that he lost visual track of me while I was getting the jugs nessled in the show we already had.

This is my first year of WS'ing -- I'm really trusting that all my optimism of seeds making it through this "strange" winter is worth it. The WS'ing group are my bestest new friends this winter (((smiles & hugs to all)))!!

Here in NW Iowa, we're currently doing the "please warm up to 30 degrees for a few hours this weekend" dance!! Let's all do the Oktoberfest Pokia dance!!!

Glad that the snow ended up North of us - we've had plenty for this "southern" city (DC). I put 40 more containers out last night right before the winds started howling. Don't worry about those little seeds, Mother Nature will take care of them and they will sprout when the time is right!

My niece isn't able to come down for the Memorial Service. Talked to her Mother and she rec'd 12 in. of snow. Somebody had to come by and pick her up for her to get to work. She works in a grocery store but don't know which town. Lives in Rockaway,NJ

tazebell, it's very cold here, and I didn't blink about setting out my latest batch today. I figure the seeds have frozen and thawed in the mail on the way to me anyway.

I'm trusting in the folks here that that is the right approach. Sow them and get them outside ASAP.

You probably don't have to deal with slippery walks every winter, well maybe you do as just freezing rain will do it. I never worried too much about falling before but am getting older.

So I keep a bucket of sand partly filled so it isn't too heavy and sprinkle my way thru the ice where I can't salt, it doesn't take much to give you traction. I can put off putting out the garbage but I have to get outside with my containers. I started with a 50# bag, but the supply inside is very low, and I don't know if I can get it loose where it's stored outside or not. When it warms up in a few days, I'll check it.

Otherwise I walk around it by walking in the snow, but if I keep using that same path, I'm going to pack it into ice, will wait until it happens. I realize walking thru snow like some of you have had may not be an option.

Also wear the best boots you have that might not be as slippery as shoes; it's worth it taking the extra time to put them on.

    nbacres,
I hear you. I know you don't know me, but it's real! It really is. Keep the faith!
My jugs , some sown in Dec., are under 3+ft of snow and I Know they'll sprout. They really will! Next year, you'll be spreading the joy .LOL

This isn't some kind of crazy gardeners cult, But a realization, of how to grow plants from seeds sown in the winter.
Easy as pie. LOL if you can cook pie?, of course.(Some of my pies stink, but I can winter sow) LOL

    :)Laura
