worm castings

Hi,

I have been mulching with straw, and throwing coffee grinds on top. They work their way through the straw, the worms come in and process them, leaving a seriously thick layer of castings under the straw (looks like herds of mice have nested).

Assuming an arid high desert climate, will the castings work their way back into the soil or do they need to be raked in? There is not a lot of rain to help them go back into the soil, and all of my irrigation is done with drip. There is enough soil moisture to keep the worms happy most of the time, though when summer is at it's peak they seem to 'rest' for a while.

Thanks!

Michelle
