What type of potting soil do most of

you use? Is it OK to use potting soil

that already has fertilizer in it like

Miracle Gro or Jungle Growth.

Thanks

I use Miracle Grow Potting Mix. As long as it's a potting mix and not a soil.

me too says feeds for 3 months

I use only miracle grow potting mix. been using it now for 6 WS seasons with near 100% germination.

    Wouldn't use anything else.

Just be sure it is the potting mix not the garden soil or the potting mix with moisture control.

garden soil gets near zero germination and moisture control, I have found, keeps the soil far to wet and never dries out.

In case you don't want to use Miracle Gro bec. it is owned by Monsanto, do a search here, under "soil"; there are several threads.
Consensus seems to favor Pro-Mix, and Fafard, for high quality soil.

Heading into my 3rd season with Pro mix. I've had great germination and like that I can buy it in large bales at a reasonable price.

Pro Mix is great... if you can find it in your area. I have never been able to.

Another soil note from a previous post-
If you ask at your local nursery, they may be willing to sell you the same mix they use to grow their seeds and seedlings.

Mine is, and it is wonderful stuff and the price is competitive, but in this case he only sells it in a large bale, which I don't need. But if I find some people to go in with me, I am definitely going to get it.

I am in need right now of some potting mix,i called every place with in 50 miles from me,only thing sold is Miracale Gro,the one Nursery will not be getting any soil-mix,in, for at least two more weeks, man, i have learned a lesson here, come fall, i will be storing up a lot of soil-mix,for next winter.

I wish we had Pro Mix,if i want to drive 100 miles one way,i can pick some up. :0(
I am so discouraged right now,who would have thought it would be this hard to find soil-mix?

    I have the same thing.
Starting last year Lowe's only carried Miracle Gro. I think it's unfortunate they don't give their customers a choice.

I'm hoping as more of us bother the nurseries with requests for Pro-mix, they will start to carry.

Just1- did you try the farm stores? Blue Seal, or other feed/grain stores? Around here, they have it, but it's outside in the snow, so I sometimes it's frozen in place, but they'll still sell it.

Where else...um...Tractor Supply Company, Agway...sometimes Home Depot HAS it, but unless you are persistent, they may not be willing to get it down off an up-high storage shelf for you. Ran into that situation once.
Target usually has Miracle Grow, and sometimes if you're lucky, Sears has some hiding in the back that never got sold, as does Wally World out on their patio hidden somewhere for the winter.

Our 'nurseries' aren't generally "up & running" much around here, so it would be hard to find it from them.

    cAROL-
Dravis Landscaping can order anything you need (asked about the 3.8 bales), and also suggested to call And's (sp?)in Dixon...tell them Dravis referred you; said they might have it. I couldn't get anyone on the phone at And's: 815-288-6060

Yep, i did try Farm & Fleet,no one sells Pro Mix,around here.
I can find all the Miracle stuff, but that is not what i want,i will try Home Depot though, i can call them, they are in the big town over.

I looked at Promix at a local nursery, and it was prohibitively expensive for me. One of the reasons I love the WS idea is because I'm thrity! I went to Lowe's today and they had the huge bags of Sta-Green potting mix for only $5 and change! A very good deal IMO, I wish I had found it before buying Miracle Gro, I would love to not support Monsanto.

I have used Miracle Grow in the past and it was fine, altough somewhat twiggy. This year, I am trying Pro-Mix, and the quality is soooo much better. because it is fluffy and does not compact as much, it seems to go farther. Also, I have less problems getting it uniformly moist. Lucky for me I live in a large suburban area and have no trouble finding it without driving 100 miles!
