I did it!

Okay, I'm brand-new to winter sowing, but I've been stalking this forum since last year. I finally joined today just so I could say I finally did my first seeds! The kids and I had a bad case of the winter blahs, so we picked up some Walmart seeds to go with the fantastic variety I got from the wintersown.org SASE program (thanks so much, Trudi!) and got our hands dirty. Only 15 one-gallon jugs, whch I know sounds like nothing compared to what most of y'all do, but we're very proud of ourselves. It was so easy and a ton of fun--as soon as we drink some more water so I have more empty jugs, I am so totally planting more seeds. Thank you all for such a great forum!

~Kate

PS: If anyone else has as much trouble as I did finding some stinkin' potting soil in the midwest in February, try Dollar General. I finally found mine there and it was super cheap. I know everyone has their favorite potting soils, but after running all over town getting looked at like I was nuts for wanting potting soil when there're two feet of snow on the ground, this stuff looked like gold. ;)

I wanted to do some up today with my 4 yr old but she has the flu. I am going to save some to do later this week with her because she loves digging in the soil.

Hooray for the newbies! I also sowed my first seeds last Monday. What a blast!

I scored really huge bales of Pro-mix at HD Big Box. The guys were really sweet. I actually had left the store because the bales were stacked high outside, frozen solid in the snow. I grabbed one of the guys helping load customer's cars in the parking lot and he said there was someone inside that would be glad to get the soil. Not only did he oblige me, trudging through the snow with a cart LOL, but the soil mix was on sale.

Who Hoo that's what I'm talkin' 'bout! Now all I need are more seeds. E mailed someone on the Exchange forum for Yvonne's Salvia, maybe I will be lucky there as well.

Sorry for the long post but WS really rocks!!

    Congrats from another ws newbie!
You should be proud of yourselves, imagine how proud you will be when you see those cute little babies in there! My son loves winter sowing and my daughter who is 15 can only take it in small doses..lol..Me,I am totally addicted!

    Yay, for us newbies.
By this time next year we'll be vets cheering on the next new bunch.
But this winter I'm still on my training wheels.
Today we bought our bottled water in jugs, just so we would have a few more containers.

Seeds we have. Containers we are scrounging for.
I wish I had learned about this in September, I'd have saved more than mushroom boxes!

This last post is so funny because I saved a Bryers icecream 1/2 gallon to use, do not know how well it will hold up though but I find any thing I am going to empty the contents I go hmmm wonder if this will work.

Yay for you! I'm glad you got started, and joined up so you can talk to us!

I know what you mean about running out of containers. I saved most of mine from last year, but I must have ditched too many for not being exactly how I want them (I played around with different ways to cut them) because I'm already out! I've looked in the garage 4 times, so sometime in spring if I find a box holding 50 containers, I will be furious.

When desperate, I go to the recycling dumpster with a coathanger taped on a stick. If you go dumpster diving, don't take actual milk jugs unless you're truly desperate, or they look completely rinsed. Stinky!!

I definitely second the "stinky milk jug" thing. I KNOW I washed those jugs, I distinctly recall doing so, but my God did they smell. I'm either gonna stick with water jugs from now on or stock up on bleach.

I already told my DH tonight that I'm sowing more as soon as he empties that ice cream tub in the freezer. I can see how quickly this could become addictive. This is, I think, the one time in my life I've ever been glad to have so much winter still stretching ahead of me! LOL

Welcome to everyone else who's new like me, and good luck to us all!

Let's look at it this way,in our desperate serach for seeds, our families and ourselves will be well hydrated and well fed! I use milk jugs alot, and what I do is wash them as soon as they empty, then after I cut them I soak them in bleach water for 5-10 minutes,I havent had a stinky jug yet!
Also,Trudi's advice on never leaving the cap on,probably helps also!:) Isn't this exciting, sitting around on a Saturady night talking about stinky milk jugs?...lol....

Snort! Yes, we're so cool, talking about the best way to avoid yucky smells!

I've been ok using my own milk jugs, which were rinsed with a little squirt of bleach, then never capped. A bit like the method of "agg" described above, but mine would sit around awhile before I cut them apart.

Yeah,we are cool! At least I think we are,I would have to ask my daughter if she does...lol....Hey! I am so cool I don't even need to spell Saturday right! :D
I agree with stage_rat,bleach, no matter when they are cut,is an effective way to avoid,"stinky jugs"!

Sitting here reading the above posts and laughing out loud, welcome to all you newbies. Keep in mind that your laundry containers (liquid) can be used also, just cover with plastic and make holes in the bottom and holes in the plastic you cover them with. Oh and don't forget Costco or Sams Club for their salads and cookies that come in nice large and deep containers.

I've played around a bit with gallon plastic bags and cardboard rolled up inside so it will sit flat. You use clothespins to keep it open.

If I can remember what post I found the directions on I'll bump it up.I plan on using them for my annuals.

Yeah, this is the most excitement I've had in a long time. Can't wait till some green sprouts up in those jugs. :o)

I found the info about the stand-up baggies. It was a clipping:

    clippings.gardenweb.com/clippings/moonphase

Bleep bleep! I don't know how to link it. Maybe someone else can dig it up or let me know how I can make it a link. It was posted by monte. If interested, maybe you can do a search.

chitownladyd, to make a link just copy the site URL (http://clippings.gardenweb.com/clippings/moonphase)
into the Optional Link URL box at the bottom of your message box. Then add a name into the Name of the Link box.

    Proceed as usual

Here is a link that might be useful: STAND UP BAGGIES CLIPPING
