Confess!

I bought a container of hearts of romaine just for WS. I am making grilled sandwiches on demand this weekend with a side of marinated salad and cupcakes. Grown kids and whoever will be wandering in and out this weekend munching etc. I'm eyeing the container.

What are YOUR predatory purchases?

My husband buys blank cds & dvds. The containers make perfect little greenhouses. Burn those cds & dvds!

Some of the seeds I have are different varieties of the same plant...I am seriously thinking about simply todssing them together in one container. What a way to add a nice wilder touch to the garden!! Instead of planned red here, blue there, yellow over there...a wilder look of mixed colors might be quite nice!

Would that count as more than 1 thing wintersowed??

I like the plastic half gallon jugs from orange juice for daylily varieties that I only have a few seeds of. I keep telling the boys, "Drink orange juice!" I was not happy with DH when he went shopping and came home with two cardboard cartons of orange juice.

I like those big clear plastic rectangles that hold 16 oz of baby Spinach or Mesclun mix. They're about the size of a shoebox and 5 inches deep. I bought one the other day mostly to get another container, and have eaten a lot of salad this week. :)

I'm thinking that they'll be perfect for the hardy annuals like Alyssum and Poppies that I'll sow HOS-style and then plant them out in hunks when they're small.

I use many of the containers that Terrene above uses, we eat salads all the time. Another favorite is the clear square containers that Costco sells cookies in, and they hold up for a few years also, longer than milk/water jugs.

I wsd for quite a while today.I have a lg cottage garden so most any thing I can add to that but I am pulling out all the yellows this spring.I made a bed last year for yellows and oranges. The CG is going more pastel this yr.I do keep some beds using plants of the one color and all that will fit in close.I sowed roasting pans today mixing up reds, then did 2 for yellows, one for purples.I will do pinks and whites tomorrow hopefully.Since they are all going in the color bed,I think this will be easier.I started on my tomatoes and herbs today also.I am ripping my herb bed up and re-doing it.Moving 3 huge butter fly bushes. It is about 25-30 ft square and has paths of stones that meet in the middle.I alread have some herbs and last yr.put daylilies in too,now I am rethinking the lilies and will move them to a bed of their own.
o yeah, the container.here we can buy water in qt. bottles in several flavors.I have been really telling my room mate she really needs to drink alot of that water-she has started slacking off,but I really need those bottles, lol

Well, Bakemom, I was going to go to the store today and buy a bunch of pop in 2 liters, but now I don't have to. I went in the shed this past week and discovered a loot of them from last year already done! I usually throw then in the recycling bags and out to the curb once I'm done with them and then start over, but my laziness has been quite fruitful this year!! YEAH!

I confess to lusting over the containers that family packs of meat come in from Walmart/Sams Club. They will hold 5 - 4 divided cellpacks and I use those disposable clear shower caps also from Walmart for covers - makes a fantastic little greenhouse......

I confess to buying lots of the strawberry and chocolate [think ovaltine] mixes so that my 3 grandsons will drink more milk. It worked! :)

I confess that everything I see, I think about how I could use it to starts seeds in!:)

Guilty as charged. I've been buying pop in 2-liter bottles and then refilling some 20oz bottles (to make them portable) instead of buying aluminum cans. Just so I can ws in the 2-L bottles!

I too buy the baby spinach and the spring mix (lettuce) in the large rectangular plastic containers. They are great! I will use them to do sowing and I also buy frozen lasagna (yes I like my own and my family prefers mine, but this kind isn't bad for a store bought, frozen lasagna, so I buy it for the nights that I don't want to have to think about supper when I get home from work) and the aluminum pan will be used for sowing 'brownie' style. :-)
My BIL drinks lots of pop from 2 litre bottles and he saves them for me....he even drops them off. :)

Milk jugs, Simply Juice OJ containers, cranberry juice containers and mesclum mix boxes. We end up with a healthy diet of things that we'd probably eat otherwise, and then get a huge garden of blooms and veggies out of it. I threw all my jugs out last spring because they were all several years old and am starting a new stash this year. Will save them from this year in big trash bags so that there will be less prep work the next few winters.

If you're really short of containers, you can go to your local coffeeshop and ask the manager if they will retain the milk jugs for you. If you make arrangements to pick them up at the end of the day each day, you can get a huge stash very quickly. I did this for a week, and ended up with something like 150-200 jugs a few years ago.

I will confess, I have been spending more time checking out the containers things come in than the labels on the containers while shopping. I threw out a deli container that held 2lbs. of macaroni salad and didn't realize it until the garbage went out. So, there I am digging through the garbage outside in the snow, waving it happily in the air when I finally secured it. I'm not crazy, just a winter sower!

spartangardner, how do you prep the cran juice jugs? We drink it anyway, but I've never figured out an easy way to use them!
