I have babies :)

This is my first time winter sowing. I started putting some containers out Jan. 8th. I got impatient and also started to put out some seeds in newspapers pots in my garage window sill. I got really addicted to making those newspapers pots and was excited about being able to just stick them in the ground without having to transfer them out of the containers. Then they started germinating and I got really excited and decided I liked that way better than winter sowing.

But today I noticed I have sprouts in my winter sown containers too! And it's been about as cold as it gets here the past few weeks, amazing! Now I'm excited I won't have to harden those off. :) So, there is a plus side to both methods, and they are both fun. Although, I think I liked making the origami newspaper pots better than I like preparing milk cartons. It will be interesting to see how each of the sets of sprouts do.

Anyway, just wanted to share my excitement. This is what I have sprouting in my winter sown containers: Coreopsis tinctoria, Achillea Cerise Queen, and Catchfly Angel Rose (Viscaria oculata). The seeds were all from Park Seed.

Thanks for all the info I got here! I can't wait to plant them!

Your flowers sound like they will be a gorgeous combination.

Will the paper pots last until you plant them out? Or will you be transferring them into bigger pots before Spring?

Woo-Hoo! That is great! I plan to try those little pots myself after fireplace season is over and I have the extra paper.I would like to have many made for next year, than all I have to do is put those little paper pots inside my ws containers and wah-lah,ready to plant babies in the spring! For now I have been making my own version of toliet paper rolls out of scraps left over from the boxes I cut up to make dividers for my containers. It is working out pretty good! Well good luck to you and congrats on the babies!:)

I love babies! I am jealous that you have some and I don't, but congrats on your babies! I have some stuff growing inside, but I enjoy my outside ones better because I don't have to baby them. I won't have to water them every day, and try to keep them from getting leggy, and harden them off. I just couldn't keep my son from growing things inside! lol

I planted containers on 5 Jan and I now have Mexican Hat and Coreopsis "Star Burst" sprouted. CATANKGIRL, I live over the hill from you, in the central valley of CA, and this has been one of the wetter years, so no watering needed yet. I also planted around 100 daylily seeds in containers outside and almost all of them are up. Can hardly wait to see some of these flowers bloom this spring.

Congrats on your new sprouts! That's so fun.

I'm jealous of your ability to make origami newspaper pots. Even after viewing a site that gives instructions and even show pictures explaining how to make the pots, I still couldn't figure it out. I'm really craft-challenged though.

mo_girl, it took a little fiddling at first, but once I got it down, it was addictive! I love that they turn out square so you can pack a bunch together neatly on a window sill in some kind of rectangular container.

woodhawk, I thought mine ws containers would be staying wet in this rain, but they are slightly under an eave and the milk jugs only have that small top hole, so I have been wetting them a little. Not every day like I have to with my newspaper pots inside though, so that is nice.

agirlsgirl, what great ideas! Somehow combining my newspaper pots with wsing, I gotta try that! Thanks!

tansy_moon, they will last until I put them out, because of my mild climate, it won't be too much longer until I can put them out. I mean, I could probably start now and they'd be ok. Yes, I'm pretty spoiled. ;)

    Thanks guys, I'm excited too!
