How long has the aquarium been set up? If the tank has not been set up long it can be part of the new tank syndrome. I have had this happen many times in both salt and freshwater aquariums. Without doing a thing it will go away completely overnight. It will probably stay this way for at least a few more days. It helps to not feed the fish heavily while the tank is reaching balance.

Use a "polishing" filter to remove as much as you can. A polishing filter is just a small micron filter bag, pad or sock that removes small particles from the water. You can add diatom powder to it to really strain out any floating crap. Is it a brown powdery type of gook? If so then it's diatoms. They are the live version of the powder. They are tiny animals that feed on excess silicates and usually appear in a new tank while it's establishing. When the silicates leach out from the new glass, caulk and plastics of the new equiptment the diatoms multiply rapidly. As the new tank ages and the silicates leaching minimizes the diatoms go away to and aren't noticeable. If it's milky white, then it will clear up in a couple weeks by itself. The white milky stuff is indeed bacteria.
