New Here

Hi everyone, I'm new here!

I've known about winter sowing for a while, but never jumped in.

I must admit that the recent weather has made me jump in with both feet - Every time we get more snow, I just sow another flat and concentrate on spring!

Today I sowed some Common Milkweed, Blue Lobelia, Cardinal Lobelia, and Fennel and Love in a Mist seeds that 2 generations of my family have been sowing and saving for years!

Hopefully, I did it right. But, live and learn, and I am having fun. . .

Welcome! You will never regard winter, or your flower beds, or plastic containers in the same light again.

I feel like we need some sort of chant, like the sheep in "Babe" to welcome newbies.

Let's work on it ..Baa Ram Ewe..

    Welcome T.
Wendy is right, you will be buying food, just for the containers.
You have a great start so far,:0)

Welcome...so great to see another excited newbie has joined this nice commnity of people!

But you are making this "getting to be an old timer" nervous with the word "flat" - - do you mean those 2 inch high black rectangles? Cause I am worried that that might not be deep enough and how do you have them covered out there? Those plastic clear toppers don't leave much head room....

Might be fine but I encourage you to consider gallon jugs, soda bottles, clear boxes from produce - containers that will give you more soil room for roots and more head room for growing sprouts.

Welcome to the group! I am gald you joined. I love sowing containers. I have more to do so the snow is ok with me! I figure as long as it keeps snowing my containers are going to be watered and kept safe :)

Nan-6161 - umm, yes, that is what I mean, lol. Oops.

I measured the depth at 3 inches, and I *thought* the headroom was ok, as it seems from what I have read that people plant stuff out pretty early - am I wrong in that?

I was comparing them to the clamshells I have from salads and stuff, (which I will be using today, in my never-ending denial of this snow) and it looked OK in comparison.

Would I be able to re-pot stuff if it starts bumping it's head on the top? I have also been saving yogurt containers and baggies from the produce dept.

Thanks for the heads up - I seem to learn best from doing things wrong the first time, lol.

I'll jump in and add my own warm welcome T. You're going to love it here. This is a fun and friendly crowd of enablers. Whereabouts are you in Zone 6? Be sure to add your containers to the official zone count thread. I'm new to winter sowing myself so I can't offer any advice on your flats but the folks here will be more than happy to offer guidance and answer questions about what works best. I've got 240 WS milk jugs and 2 liter bottles riding on this!
