Animals don't dwell on death as we do, because they have no notion of what may, or may not come after.

But they do suffer pain, and when they are in our care and suffering, and there seems to be no means of alleviating it, we have a moral obligaion to end that pain for them, in a quick, humane manner.

So yes, there is something you can do to help.

bradleykeith: I am sadly aware of that, but she was describing a fish suffering, and near it's end.

Often the only thing we can do for an animal is end it's suffering, and when it's a fish, that cannot be held or petted to comfort it, you can just watch as it dies, or help it in the only manner remaining.

It's never an easy choice, but when it's the only humane one, we are obligated to make it, or cease keeping animals that depend upon us to care for them.
