Using fine vermitculite

I have noticed in a lot of the seeds/plant catalogs, they recommend using fine grade vermitculite on the seeds to improve germination. I have seen some of you that grow a large volume of seeds do it, especially those that have greenhouses. How many of you that WS in jugs/liters and cups use this method? Do you find it does make a difference? What is the real purpose of the vermitculite or is it another marketing tool to sell more gardening supplies? I think Clint uses it for his coneflowers, if my memory is correct. Maybe he will read this and post an answer and advice. There is so much to remember to do, especially for a first time Wintersower, that it becomes a bit overwhelming, even if you try to keep it simple. I'm sure next year I will be more confident and find what works best for me out of experience, just like all of you have.
