Has it started to grow it's spike yet? You could pot it up when it starts to grow INDOORS and place outdoors AFTER the danger of frost is past. I have on 7 incher that is throwing up a flower stalk right now. I LOVE these plants!

Tommy, it is just starting to peek out. I think I will wait a little bit,and then pot up. When I first got this bulb, or it's great grandparent, I was so excited, and tried to grow the bulb as long as possible to get a really BIG one so I could get a big flower, but after blooming a couple times, it split. I was so disapointed,even though I had gotten a really big bloom. I stopped growing them for a while, but now I'm back to square one. Yes, these are really interesting bulbs! :) Arum

i have 4 good sized corms.. 3 are doing great,flowered,
and actually have berries set..yea!
im thinking of getting some smaller corms (softball size)
and devoting area in garden with appropriate soil to growing them out this summer?? thoughts?
as i understand it..the corm needs a good sized pot to
put on growth ..anyone tried this??

Just fertilize, fertilize, fertilize.

Last year I was given several small offsets, .5 to 1". After reading an older thread on the IAS where folks were growing these with S. venosum in 6b/5a I thought I might try to grow them in ground overwinter. I chickened out! I lifted in autumn (still leafed out) at the same time as Xanthosoma, after first (light) frost. I grew in full sun, in a hole filled with compost and old wood mulch, very well draining. They increased to up to hardball size but several had started to rot a bit. I was able to save them all but am thinking the cool with wet was the cause. Odd because z9 Xanth. tubers were fine. Any thoughts?

Cool + wet = trouble! When I see the leaf stalks wilt over I cut them off at soil level, dig out the corms and clean them off, set them some place to dry, take off the roots and bring them inside.

It's a bit of a fine balancing act if you're in a cold climate. You need to leave them as long as possible for all nutrients to transfer from the leaf and roots to the tuber before digging them up. And at the same time they shouldn't be exposed to cold wet.
