Hi Rich. So good to see your post.
I am behind too. Am having a visitor, so I can't do much until after her departure.
Still have tons to seeds to sow and backyard to clean and dahlias to pot up......
I was getting anxious the last few weeks when the weather was nice, but today the snow has helped alleviate the anxiety. :-) It's still too early to panic. :-)

I will do it just not the 200+ containers I would like. Still picking up from the autumn clean up I never finished, and a spring ski weekend in the New Hampshire mountains doesn't help much. Hey this is New England and and we're still in for plenty of cool if not cold weather until the real spring hits. Wait we never have a real spring just a bunch of warmer than normal days followed by cold east winds until winter turns into summer. Think Spring and happy planting.

i'm just a little south of boston, by the coast ... to possibly motivate you (and to brag a tiny bit), first sprouts appeared today!

    ⺠Alcea rugosa
    ⺠Digitalis fontanesii
    ⺠Digitalis lantana
    ⺠Digitalis purpurea apricot
    ⺠Geranium sessiliflorum rubrum
    ⺠Meconopsis betonicifolia blue
    ⺠Meconopsis lingholm
    ⺠Meconopsis sheldonii x lingholm
    ⺠Rudbeckia occidentalis 'green wizard'

the inevitable cool spell (it always happens) will be a perfect time to consider flinging a few jugs of seeds outside.

    yay for spring!

I keep talking and writing about winter sowing/spring sowing, just haven't gotten any done since December. There are less than 20 new ws containers setting out on my patio table today.

This unusually warm weather is making me wonder if I'm going to have enough cold strat time for some of my seed. If I don't get a move on this is going to be a year of virtual ws for me.

There are lots of plants in holding beds ready to be moved and other garden projects needing to be done.

Still...I have all these wonderful seeds from swaps and trades that I want to sow. So, sew, sow...

Hi, Rich. So good to hear from you. I hope all is well. Yes, in your climate you have plenty of time left.

I haven't done much WSing this year either, only 15 jugs so far. Yesterday I sowed tomatoes in cups. I'll do some annuals soon. I have only done a few inside under lights. I have also gone a little coleus crazy in recent years and I propagate those from cuttings inside under lights.

Hey, Rich, have you made up your labels yet?

Tonight I wrote out my labels (mini-blinds) and filled out my notebook and am ready to sow tomorrow.

Tomorrow, okay, I've said that before, but I haven't had the labels done so maybe...

Karen your Coleus look beautiful. I rooted and overwintered some last winter. They sure didn't look that nice! Do you have some magical secret you would like to share? LOL
    Glenna

Thanks, Glenna. Pretty off topic but...

No big secret though. I took cuttings last fall only of my healthiest coleus, all trailers. I plant them in yogurt cups and keep under a humidity dome until they're rooted, about a week or two. Once days get short I keep them under my fluorescent lights for about 14 hours/day. I pinch a lot and pot them up as necessary. Coleus really are easy to propagate from cuttings and, I found out this year, geraniums are, too.

Thanks Karen. They look so healthy and pretty! I will have to try the geraniums too.

Didn't do any sowing yesterday but I worked on winter sowing by bringing overwintering containers (those that take two years to germinate) from the vegetable bed/cleaning them up a bit by removing pine needles and leaves from the containers and put them in my ws ghetto on my patio. I saw a sprout in one container. Hope it is a seedling not a weed.

Okay I just knew I could create pressure on myself by starting this thread:).
I got started and sowed some lettuce, bachelor buttons, zinnia, and basil. Since I didnÂt collect or make any jugs this winter I took the lazy route and used last years already prepared 16 oz. plastic cups. I didnÂt even bother label I just wrote down on a note pad what I sowed. The hardest part is overÂ..getting started. Oh and hello to those who said hi first, thanks.

Glad to hear that you have gotten started, Rich. I am also using jugs and 2Ls and cups from last year. Those seedlings should be fairly easy to recognize without labels.

I did a few perennials today and will do more tomorrow.

We are to have temps in the low 70s next week so I am going to do most of my sowing outside then. Will also start my annuals though it may be a little early here.

MN has been having a very warm spring with no snow and little rain throughout March. Still lots of moisture in the ground though from melted snow. Some of my 2nd year containers needed watering. That's a first for March for me.

Today our high was 36 degrees, a blip, and then back to the high 50s again in two days. Normal averages are mid-40s.
