Sick Potted Azalea

HELP! I have a potted azalea that I got in July and it was happy and healthy until I left it with a friend while I was gone. When I got back it had lots of brown sticks and buds that had just never opened and turned brown. I am guessing it was from over watering, as it was sitting in water. I took it to the gardner I got it from and they recommended I give it a little Meracid, clip all the brown away, and check that the soil was not molded, but it still is looking droopy. When you prune it the main branches are still green -- so I am hoping there is still hope.

Could it be that I need to put it in a bigger pot? Please help. I have done so well taking care of it and I am so sad it is sick. Thank you.
