Normal - 'indumentum of hairs on the lower leaf side'.

The function of indumentum is to store water in periods of drought, and also the opposite function of expiring moisture in periods of excess water/rain.

And besides that - it adds some interest to the plain green leaf persistent for us all year round when the plant is not in bloom ;)

Even though many kinds are fuzzy many people apparently don't notice this at time of purchase, think there is something wrong when they see the natural coatings on their rhododendrons later.

Thankyou. I'm happy to hear it's normal. This is such a pretty rhododendron whether in bloom or not. I love the round compact form and dark green leaves. Mind you, I think it received a bit of sun scorch or wind burn some of the leaves at the top layer, so I'm thinking of removing those top whorls after it's finished blooming. Does this sound like a good idea?

If you are interested in maintaining the height or width, chances are the new growth that comes out after bloom could hide any imperfections on older foliage. And, in approx three years those leaves will drop off on their own.

If you are not concerned with your plant adding to its size, yes, you could remove the last years growth (immediately after blooming) if you wish but it's not necessary.

No, I'm not really concerned too much about the height and width, it has plenty of room to spread out where it is located. Maybe I'll just wait and see if the new growth does hide some of those older leaves. Don't ya just love rhododendrons? Now I gotta go and find me some pine needles. lol
