ID needed for aroid in S Texas

I'm trying to find the name of this aroid that's grown in the Brownsville area of South Texas. It has anthuriumlike foliage and I've heard it's native just south of here in Mexico but can't verify that. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks

    This looks like a young Alocasia cucullata.

    How long do they stay like that? These have been around for a couple of years and still look the same way. Does growing them in shade make a difference?
