Could a calla lilly and elephant ear thrive outdoors year round in zone 7 MD? Digging up the bulbs/tubers is a hassle and keeping these plants would be much easer if they could stay in the ground year round.
I'm thinking no. I've always heard they are hardy in zone 8 and up. I am in zone 8 and mine have always come back and that isn't too far from you. I think if it is worth it to you you might want to try it for a year and if they don't come back you have your answer, but will have to replant.
I am on the line between 7a and 7b and have both Callas and EEs come back year after year. The key is to mulch well. I only lost a few EEs this past winter, and they were in areas that didn't get as good a covering as the ones that survived. As emily mentioned, the only way to know for sure is to try it.
Thanks Emily and Robert. I think I will wait another year to risk leaving the plants outside during the winter. I will be able to propagate some and keep some inside and leave some outside. That way I have some to replace any that were lost over the winter. Thanks again for your advise.
I have an elephant ear plant and have what I thought was a bloom but now wonder if it was seeds there are two of them and they are now a bit soft was it a bloom or is it a bloom.
I live in Zone 5 so they definately do not survive here. However, if you are a lazy and SMART gardener (!) just put your tubers in a pot with good soil and let them grow there. When the frosts begin where I live, I bring them inside and that is the end of them for that year. I can put them in a sunny window around Jan or Feb. and the foilage begins again. By summer, calla lillies! No digging and searching for the bulbs and they look great in a nice pot, especially if you add some annuals.... Try it!
