Winter damaged is not the same as sick :)

Remove anything clearly dead, damaged, or broken by snow/wind/ice with sharp pruners so as not to allow a secondary foothold for insects or disease - then wait for it to recover and put out new foliage buds this season.

Thanks I was concerned. I just started landscaping and gardening last year. It's still all new to me. Took your advice. Here is what she is looking like now....

daydreamer~She's beautiful! May I ask her "name"? I am trying to narrow down a list of compact, pink flowering rhodies hardy to zone 5. I've come up with 'Aglo', 'Besse Howels', and 'Hellikki', so far they look the most promising. Advice welcome. :)

I think that's looking good! Are you happier with it now? Those foliage buds should be opening soon and will help cover any residual marks from last seasons freeze.

Aglo is a small leaved pink rhododendron that is very hardy. It tolerates sun well and should have good fall foliage.

Besse Howells is a large leaved deep red rhododendron that is quite hardy.

These two bloom a little early and have good compact habit. However only Aglo is pink.

Hellikki is a large leaved purple rhododendron that is very hardy. It is a larger plant than the other two and blooms after most others have finished.

Actually It's English Roseum. Deep rose buds open to light rose flowers. The picture is pretty true to color. I bought this last year when my gardening adventures began not even knowing that I had other options for rhodies.The only time I had seen a rhodie (before moving to New Hampshire 10 years ago)was at The New York Botanical Garden where I grew up. Somehow I dont think it would have made a good fire escape plant. LOL Wishing I had more shady areas in the yard for another type and some Azaleas.
