Diseased Plants

Be careful when buying tropical plants mainly coming from south fl. Many are coming in diseased with virus that stunts their growth & infects other tropicals near it. If you touch or clip a sick plant & go to another your whole yard can then become infected. I had this happen to me. We are moving just so I can start over again. Bought many rare aroids & gingers on ebay. Many are reputable dealers but look at their plants they are selling them with distorted or stunted leaves even the color or variegation doesn't look right.
We just told McDill Air Force base the tropical plants they are selling are diseased the plant owner said you have to do what you have to do. People can just dig up all of there tropicals, Soon many plants all over will lose all of their beauty. People will buy these unknowingly & spread it to their other plants. It is really a concern & we are angered that ag inspections let this get by.

what types are you seeing to be the most infected? I just removed a colocasia that I am 99% sure had mosaic virus but it did not come from south florida..Now I have to think what plants I have gotten from there recently

Most all tropicals are infected. You can see it on any new leaf or stem growth. It grows with curled tip not straight it is a sure sign. If you buy on ebay your surely going to get an infected plant. This was my mistake. Unknowingly growing them & I see this in all of my tropicals from orchids, water lillies all of my treasured aroids &
trees. They have stopped growing. I try to inform people when I can so this won't happen to them.

Hi debs plants

The way you talk, it sounds like everthings got one virus, which is hard to believe!
You also make it sound like ordering any plant from eBay is a death sentence for people's gardens!
While I'm sure there's some sick plants on eBay, I got one, from s fl even, but it's been destroyed and everything else treated appropriatly, with no signs of it spreading!
Im also quite sure there are some very high quality plants there too! Some real plantsmen sell there!
Generalizations are dangerous!

I don't mean to sound critical, I'm intrigued!
I want more tropicals!
S Florida is the place to get em alotta the time!
So a really appriciate the heads up, but we really need more info about this virus or whatever it is, just saying its attacks all tropicals really makes me wonder what could be going on...
I'm very sorry for the loss of you garden, I've been there its awful!

I had similar thoughts reading this too. It sounds very sad, I feel awful for you, so sorry! There's not much info for folks to use here, knowing what disease you are talking about would be helpful. I didn't understand the comment about the air base. Do you have any pics of the sick plants?

Don't have anymore info on this??. 99 percent of what I grow is tropical and never buy outside of florida this year has been more vigorous that usual which i credit to the record warm winter and almost perfect rainfall. It has been drowning my orchids though !! gary
