Hack Gardener Success!

At the end of the season last year, I potted up plants, mostly from WS seeds, to take with me to SC. I took some late season cuttings of shrubs in my yard that I absolutely want to have & either haven't bloomed and shown seed or won't come true from seed. These cuttings I plunked in Miracle Gro potting soil in pots, no special treatment. All of these went down to my basement, where I have an incandescent ceiling light that I remembered to turn on over them at least half the days they were down there. I watered them from time to time. I figured I'd be moving soon, but I'm not there yet.

Thinking it's time to start getting them up and acclimated as the weather is beginning to change, I just pulled a bunch of them upstairs and put them on a tray to take outside & in over the next week or two. Lots of dead foliage got removed. Showing new growth, WS last year - three of three aquilegias (this doesn't surprise me, as I've left aquilegias in pots outside all winter before), hypericum ascyron (thrilled about this - one of my favorite UK plants), cornus stolonifera, and primula veris (although this one had whitefly, so we'll see). Lavender French Perfume appears to be alive; fibigia clypeata and echinacea angustifolia, not so much. My beach plum (prunus maritima) might be as well, I'm hoping like crazy on this one as it took me years to get one seedling. Jury's still out on campanula glomerata alba and geranium Reflections - as my campanulas die back to the ground every year outside, I'm not giving up yet.

A real thrill is that my boxwood and ROS Bluebird (which is my Dad's memorial plant) cuttings rooted!

It boggles my mind how sturdy plants are, that even with my "hack gardening" approach, they survive!

When I get to the rest of them, I'll add updates. :)
