Purple Gem needs nearly full sun exposure to retain a tight growth habit and bloom profusely. They bloomed well last year (2012) because they had already set flower buds the year before (2011). It's also pretty common to have few flowers the year after planting out because the plant is putting most of its energy into root and vegetative growth. In a mostly shady location, however, Purple Gem will grow increasingly straggly and bloom sparsely.

I'm sad to hear that. Especially because I planted four more this spring.That probably explains why they sell for $7 at Home Depot. They look beautiful in bloom in their little pots. Perhaps I will have to replace them with something else.

Be sure to buy plants that will bloom in shade. Most will not bloom well in shade.
