Art for over the sofa?

My mom asked me for suggestions on decorating the space above her Brown leather Sofa. Her taste is so different from mine that I have no ideas. They just removed an enormous bookcase that dwarfed the room, that was behind the Sofa. I think she Needs to lose the rug and pillows and get some life into the space. I have no clue what to put on the wall.
