If it's visible from an island seating area or adjacent area you may want tile, otherwise I would skip. Another option would be 'scribe' moulding from your cabinet supplier lining up with the bottom of your light rail.

I really can hardly tell since it's shadowed in there (and we don't have under cabinet lighting), but I don't know what I'm doing. That's why I love HOUZZ. ! :) I don't know about what scribe is or getting moulding from the cab supplier. I can ask the builder maybe?

This is the view of the range/microwave area where there shows SOME trim tile near the microwave but under the cabs has no trim tile. Does it matter? I know none of my friends will probably ever notice. This isn't our forever house either so I dont know. ???

Since the guy filled in the area with the mastic how would the trim pieces even fit now? There's not a lot of depth left in there so the trim pieces might have to stick out farther now. This is so frustrating.

No need for trim tile under cabinets if backsplash goes right to the top. Only needed if it can be seen. Most backsplashes to top of cabinets do not have trim tile, just mortar

The guy who did this so far said he would bring the grout all the way up but I'm really on the fence whether this looks "unfinished" or not.

I would insist it be tiled. That's the OCD in me.

I think that is too much space to fill with grout.

If the tile goes all the way up to the cabinets, you don't need trim. That's how we did it, and it looks great.

If you view the third picture that shows my thumb you can see how much space is there. It's not exactly all the way up.

What does the trim look like? The trim may look worse than the mortar/mastic.

The trim is a pencil line that matches the tile. You can see it if you are able to zoom in on the last photo where it shows the range and microwave area.

Is it possible to trim with wood instead? It may look like it's part of the cabinet that way and fill in the space while saving you the cost of the tile trim. Maybe I'm off my rocker, but it's just a thought... ;)

I agree, that space is too large to fill with grout. Not acceptable, really. It's like getting your cabinets and they have no backs. You can't see unless you open the doors....but it doesn't make it right. I think if you're going through the expense, then at the least...continue the tile to meet the cabinets underneath.....or a coordinating wood trim to match the cabinets. But tiles would be my first choice, and less expensive than pencil trim/tile pieces. Good luck! The kitchen looks nice mamabear. :)

I have exacty what you are fearing . . . installed by the prior homeowners and it bugs me. i.e. large gap filled in with grout It looks like it wasn't well done. So i suggest filling in that space with tile, withe the pencil tile trim or a wood piece of trim to match the cabinets. I can't recommend just filling it in with a thick line of grout.

I agree with Bernadette, probably pencil tile trim would be the best solution. THe fact that you are asking, you must have some doubts on it. It should be finished.

And since you already have the pencil trm under the microwave space, continuing it all around would be consistent. have someone hold some up under the cabinet and see what you think.

They should be able to cut it/get it out. I don't feel there should be a problem. Especially if this is something they do on a regular basis. :) Did you ask them, I would ask the installer. Let them know your concerns. :)

Let's just say I don't think there is a lot of experience or design in mind when they do anything. I've been completely stressed out during this whole build because it seems like I'm the only one who knows or cares what things are supposed to LOOK LIKE. I'm pretty sure if I told them to put the trim tile in they would just stick it on the top and move along regardless of how it looks. I'll talk to them tomorrow though. Thank you.

I just looked at how my installer handled the same situation. He cut small pieces to fit the 1/2" space. It looks right.

Hi Mamabear! I realize this thread is pretty old, but can I just ask if you remember the name/brand of that tile? I am seriously suffering from tile envy right now! :) (also, too late to chime in on the trim question, but personally, I would have used either pencil trim or white wood trim that matches your cabinets. A big gap like that would drive me nuts!)
