I had it 6 or 7 years back, Alida. I didn't care for the bloom color; I thought of it as "floozy pink" if you know what I mean, and it really clashed with many of the other roses in that part of the garden. It also turned out to be a climber that was not cane hardy in zone 4 in spite of High Country's recommendation. I sent it to live with a lady from my rose society in her sheltered garden in Traverse City where the conditions are closer to a high zone 5. After several years there, it has not impressed anyone (and it's not for lack of care as this lady is a Consulting Rosarian.) Last time we talked about Hattie, it was being considered for the shovel.

I grew it for one season---it was not hardy for me in Zone 4, either. I don't recall the color being objectionable and I did enjoy the fragrance, which was lemony.

I planted it next to my house, it hasn't grown much or bloomed yet, but it's growing from a band size. Did you ever end up buying?

I think I tried it in Alaska zone 3 and it gave a beautiful bloom, but did not make it through the Winter there. I do have a "floozy" rose here which I think is Ulrich Brunner Fils from Rogue Valley Roses and it is really starting to grow on me. It was a small band which sadly was not "Umbra". Ulrich was described as vulgar by a famous rosarian. In this first season it grew 6 feet, was in bloom constantly and perfectly healthy. I'm calling it Marge in honor of my first mother-in-law.

For decades -- almost a century, in fact -- anything smacking of a bluish pink was called "vulgar." "Horrid magenta" was the phrase usually employed.

I seems to be connected the invention of inexpensive aniline (coal tar) dyes in the 1850s, the first of which to be introduced was the hitherto rare and sought-after color purple and its paler variants. Within a few years purple and mauve were seen everywhere, until the humourous magazine Punch wrote: “The Mauve Measles are spreading to so serious an extent that it is high time to consider by what means [they] may be checked.”. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauveine

Now that almost all dyes are synthetic, purple doesn't stand out as especially awful. In fact, all colors are beautiful, or can be made so when properly set off. But to be honest, once you have seen natural dyes, synthetic colors do appear harsher and more glaring. I myself had the realization that so many wildflowers are a pale washed out lavender (mauve). And they really do go with everything in the garden. It is mysterious.
