Sure can be found elsewhere cheaper! How about for free???? Call your local hospital and ask for "Housekeeping." When you get that dept ask them if they have any of their plastic containers that you may have. These are filled with liquid soap and bleach and are 55 gallon. They come with screw on caps and you can go even add your own hand pump if you need one. You'll need a skill saw to cut them in half - pretty thick.

$60 for a half barrel - give me a break!

This spring, I found a plastic storage hamper that is made of heavy, pale gray plastic. It has a 3.5 cubic foot capacity and has white rope handles. I found it at a Canadian Tire store (...sort of a cross between Home Depot and Wal-mart....) for $5.99 Canadian on sale. I bought 8 of them! I drilled a bunch of holes in the bottom for drainage and planted bush type tomatoes. The tomatoes are growing great; next year I'll try some peppers in them too and I'll probably start using them for annuals. The containers look much better than most pots you can buy and the capacity is great. My husband just today built trolleys for them so they can be noved around easily. I'm sure you can find something similar where you are.

Big lots has heavy duty plastic tubs for around $4. I believe they are 20 or 30 gallons.

If you are looking for those big blue barrels, there is a place on Rt. 4 in Northwood, NH near the Nottingham line that sells them.

Here's what you do: Look in the phonebook for your nearest soft drink manufacturer/bottler. They give away or sell for a modest amount 55 gallon drums which can be cut. You might have to rinse out the residue from the syrup. But it's food grade to start with.
