Color Magic had a beautiful, beautiful flower, but it had terrible die-back. If you pruned even a bit of the cane it would die back nearly to the ground. Not good if you want a cutting rose. I had 3, they are all gone now.

Have a look at 'Gemini', which is an absolutely superb cut flower.

Thanks for the warning, hoovb. I already have Gemini...when it blooms, it's good. Got it from J & P years ago, so I know it's on the rootstock they graft onto (Dr. Huey?) Maybe it would bloom more if it were on multiflora. I'm also thinking of trying Secret-from Roses Unlimited. Wish I could get it on multiflora though. But I've always looked at Mon Cheri and thought it was gorgeous!

Color Magic - lovely for sure but in addition to dieback, it ages poorly IMO. Bloom turns red and white but not in an attractive way, at least here in So. Calif.
First Prize is good for my replacement. Big blooms and the color is rich. I've had Secret before and it's nice too. Smells good.

Mon Cheri does very well in Southern California. Almost always in bloom, good vase life. But don;t know how it does in less ideal climates.

If you're looking for a great rose with Color Magic/Mon Cheri color tones, check out Brigadoon. No quilling, nice fragrance (altho mild), good vase life, quick repeat -- plus the bush is healthy with lovely form and foliage.

I second Brigadoon, wonderful rose! Lovely fragrance, great for cutting to put in vase.

I have found that Color Magic has dieback. I don't know how well Mon Cheri is in the vase because I rarely cut my roses. It certainly does better in the garden than Color Magic. I don't know Headliner.

I love Mon Cheri. It did fine in a pot. In the ground, I never had a prime spot for it. However, it is doing better each year. Mine smells good, too, though some folks argue with me about this. It is really pretty!
I have seen Headliner in rose gardens and really loved it, too.
