Changing soil structure

I've ripped out some old yews to make more space for roses, and the soil, as is typical for Southern NJ, contains a lot of green marl, that sticky clay. Is there any way to simply amend that soil by adding more organic material, or is it necessary to dig it all out and replace it? Thanks!
