Two Most Outstanding....

Greetings,

I am just trying to get the energy to go outside and work in the gardens again all day. I have been outside the past 3 days hauling mulch and building a greenhouse. My body is screaming to stay inside on the couch and I'm supposed to be on vacation? ha ha.

As I was reading through the posts I just had to tell you of a couple of the most outstanding roses in my garden this year as they are still going strong and are keeping my garden exciting. My favorites seem to change everytime I walk through my gardens. ha ha. So these two favorites are from my walk yesterday.

ORANGE TRIUMPH - This little baby blooms all year long and is covered with smaller pink/mauve colored roses. It is still blooming and looks great.

TAMORA - An Austin rose which is just covered in beautiful peach/salmon colored, large flowers and looks as though it is not going to hang up blooming anytime soon.

I still have so many roses blooming that I hate to see the cold weather move in. Right now ANTIQUE 89 is blooming beautifully next to a wisteria that bloomed for the first time since I've planted it 7 years ago. I love the wisteria and am glad it has finally bloomed. But the gorgous pink blooms with the cream colored centers of ANTIQUE 89 are a beautiful combination with the wisteria.

I am getting ready to place a couple more large rose orders for Spring delivery and appreciate all your advice. Do any of you have roses that are still going strong and have wow'd you with beautiful foliage and lovely blooms?

Ladylotus, I do have a number of roses that have truly wowed me this year, but I'm not sure how they would all do in your zone. One that I know would be extremely hardy in your zone is Prairie Joy, a rose from the Parkland Canadian series. The soft pink blooms are a good size and filled with peetals - looks like a David Austin rose. It has an extremely heavy bloom in the spring (mine is so full of blooms sometimes the foliage is hidden, and then a lighter but still nice series of reblooms throughout the summer and fall (the picture below is a summer bloom). It is not only hardy, but extremely disease resistant - not a bit of blackspot or mildew on mine. The new David Austin 'Jubilee Celebration' hasn't quit blooming all summer, nor have the floribundas 'Rainbow Sorbet' and 'Royal Wedding'. They have wowed us nonstop and both have been extremely disease resistant also. They're hardy here but I don't know about zone 3/4. Another super hardy, lovely and fragrant rose is Morden Sunrise. It's peachy yellow pink single blooms are large and smell "tooty fruity' according to my granddaughter. Great rebloom on this one too. Prairie Sunrise, a Buck rose, has been another gorgeous almost-constant bloomer this year. For a climber, I'm delighted with the rebloom on Rambllin' Red. Good luck with your choices!

Sounds like you've had a lot of good things going on lately at your place. You'll have to go back to work to get some rest.

A couple that have entertained me this summer have been the David Austin roses, 'Heritage' & 'Golden Celebration'. And my antique roses continue to please.

I'm amazed that the two roses you mentioned are both Kordes roses. Not typical on this site. I have both along with 50 or so other K's. OT has not been doing well for me but then I discovered that my soil was low in iron. Since adding iron via Bonide they have revived and are doing much better. It will take time for them to completely get back.
Antique '89 has no such problems and it still growing and blooming.

At the moment an oldie, Eutin, is completely covered with flowers. And no BS or JB's. Why it doing so well.

Why is Eutin doing so well, Jim? Because it is one tough cookie that wants to survive and thrive, regardless of conditions.

I've grown several Eutins for many, many years--in fact, it was the first rose that I ever grew (13 of them!)--some thirty years ago. Wherever I've moved, I've always planted at least a couple Eutins.

Isn't Eutin showy when the rosy-red mass of blooms appears! Just wish it didn't take so long to re-bloom, but I always forgive it because it is so bright and abundant when it does.

And, of course, it has good disease-resistance.

That's why your Eutin does so well, Jim. : )

    Greetings,

Today I have several more that I could not resist mentioning as they are just outstanding and have all mentioned have bloomed ALL summer long.

FLORA DORA is a beautiful rose, the flowers are small, double, and dark pink in color. This plant is so heavily loaded with flowers it is amazing. I did not even have to deadhead this one. It just keeps on ticking. I don't know who hybridized this rose?

LOUISA STONE, is a gorgeous cream colored rose that is very double and somewhat reminds me of the Austin roses although the hybridizer is Harkness. I purchased it because the information on this rose indicates it's an apricot color. I've not seen that in mine. I would say mine leans towards cream and fades to white. This rose bloomed without stopping for a break.

PRAIRIE BREEZE, is another really nice Buck rose with large dark pink colored blooms and a wonderful spicy fragrance. I cut this one and bring it in and it really makes a room smell great.

COUNTRY DANCER and AUNT HONEY are both Buck roses that have large, double, dark pink blooms. The blooms also have fragrance so I like to cut some of the blooms and bring them in as well.

Elveshorn is another Kordes that is just stunning. Mine has clusters of stunning pink flowers that seem to cover the entire plant. This is a real workhorse also, as it just keeps blooming.

I have alreay identified all the roses I am going to purchase for Spring delivery. It's crazy I have so many roses already, but I can't seem to stop myself from purchasing more. Unfortunately, they are going to be large orders again. Will I ever be satisfied with one or two purchases? This year I've selected more reds. I don't seem to have many reds in the garden.

Jim, I like the Kordes roses. I agree that mostly the Buck's roses seem to garner quite a bit of attention on this forum. I suppose they are perhaps very hardy and readily available equating to more purchases of this variety. My favorites are the beautiful Austin roses, but they are not very hardy here and have to be babied along. I've not heard of Eutin. I am going to research this one.

Randy, yes...there has been a whirlwind of activity around here. I love this cool weather and am trying to get as much done as possible. I'm hoping if I get everything mulched real heavily that next year I will get to sit and enjoy the gardens a bit more. I did not find ANY time this year to sit and relax in my gardens as the weeds were INSANE!!!! I have to find a remedy for this as I want to do more than be tied down to my gardens.

Karen, thank you for listing the names of several roses. I remember seeing PRAIRIE JOY and made a mental note to purchase that one but you have now confiremed the need to get this one asap. I am putting that one back on my want list. It really sounds like a winner.

MORDEN SUNRISE, PRAIRIE SUNRISE and RAMBLIN RED I alreay have and love all of them. Your photos are beautiful thank you for sharing them.

Well, I better get myself off to bed. Tomorrow my vacation is over and it's back to work....ummm work where I receive a paycheck. ha ha.
