Doubt Abracadabra will do anything for you in your zone. I get a lot of die back here in 6b

My Abracadabra died over its first winter, but my reverted Abracadabra is fine and it is two years old now. It's a small plant but blooms well.

I believe Abracadabra and Memphis Music are the same cultivar. This plant, under the name Memphis Music, is easily available from Two Sisters Roses. I grow them side by side and Abracadabra and Memphis Music are identical in my yard -- the same size, shape and diseases, and they even bloom on the same bloom cycle. And look -- they have the same sports also -- Kordes' Frisco would be Top Contender and Kordes' Black Beauty would be Memphis Magic.

I tried Patsy Cline a number of time and it would not take our winters even with the winter protection I put on it.
Kstrong, Abracadabra and Memphis Music are not the same cultivar. Abracadabra is a pink blend hybrid tea by William A. Warriner and was registered by J&P as JACbute.
    {{gwi:326817}}
Memphis Music is a red blend mini-flora by Verlie W. Wells and was registered as Welmusic. It's described as having dark red flowers with yellow stripes upper and yellow and red reverse.
    {{gwi:326818}}
Abracadabra has a strong fragrance and Memphis Music none or mild fragrance.
I suspect one or the other of your identical blooming roses was marked wrong.

Of course, Karl's picture is of Warriner's Abacadabra. I see that Cliff will have the Kordes Abacadabra.

It is very interesting that the flower and the sports are so similar to Well's minifloras.

Well, I grow KORDES' Abracadabra side-by-side with the cultivar to which Whit Wells attached the name Memphis Music. They are identical, and neither of them has any fragrance. The Abracadabra I got came from Carlton's cultivar originally (via Lorene Moore) and the Memphis Music cultivar came from Two Sisters (and when you buy a Whit Wells rose from Two Sisters, Whit Wells sends the rose to you directly from his stock). So neither of them is "mismarked." It is my belief that Whit Wells mixed up his stock when he was hybridizing and simply mistakenly re-registered a cultivar that was already registered. This has happened with one other Whit Wells rose also, for which the ARS withdrew his registration after the fact.

In any event, if you are looking for Kordes Abracadabra (which is rare in commerce and on Ebay sometimes fetches $100 plus per plant), you could actually save quite a bit by just going to Two Sisters website and getting the same plant for $13.50.

Kathy, I grow 'Memphis Music', which is a minifloria. I thought the KORDES Abracadabra was a Hybrid Tea? Are you saying they are both minifloras? Help me out here, I'm confused, please.

Kathy, You are correct and I'm sorry.
Terry, The Kordes rose is very similar to Memphis Music except it's a hybrid tea and Memphis Music is a miniflora. There should be a bloom size difference.

Sorry, I grow the wrong one.
I hate when 2 roses have the same name.

Abracadabra Pink blend Hybrid Tea. Bred by William A. Warriner (1991)

Gotcha; thanks for the clarification....that's what I thought. I love 'Memphis Music'; the blooms last forever and it's been a great little rose so far. Hope it's winter hardy...anyone have any comments about how it makes it through Zone 5 winters?

I don't grow Memphis Music, but the blooms on Abracadabra were very small for a hybrid tea. I could certainly see them being the same rose.

Kathy, do you think the ARS may be changing the registration on Memphis Music? I know it took them awhile to change Summer Nights to Conundrum. Who checks these things at ARS? I did look at the sports of Abracadabra and they did look like Memphis Magic and Top Contender. I have all of these minifloras, by the way,and they are great. If the Kordes Abracadabra is the same size as Memphis Music, it is a pretty small hybrid tea.

I'm not exactly sure how the "hybrid tea" label got attached to Abracadabra.

Anyway, I don't think Kordes considers it a Hybrid Tea -- they list it under "cut roses -- small flowered." Whomever at the ARS listed it as a hybrid tea probably got it wrong.

Certainly both Abracadabra and Memphis Music (and their sports) are all mini-flora sized. Just as weirdly, and even though it's exactly the same size, ARS lists the rose from which Abracadabra sported -- Frisco -- as a floribunda. (It's not that either -- all of them should be mini-floras).

You are so right - those pictures of Abracadabra and Black Beauty are identical to Memphis Magic and Memphis Music, and they do describe them as small. Frisco doesn't look as much like Top Contender, but it could just be the picture.

The Kordes roses were hybridized several years before Well's. I wonder why the people from Kordes didn't complain when they saw them. Or - maybe they never saw them!

Here's some blooms of 'MEMPHIS MUSIC' taken today.

Thanks for all the responses.I haven't ordered Abracadabra as I haven't gotten in to growing minis yet.The only mini I bought memphis music is blooming in red with out stripes for me . I have picked patsy cline, osiana and Tintinnara from the list.Iam surprised that none of you have commented on other roses on the list.
Karl-If you couldn't over winter Patsy cline ,I wonder whether I can. Your pic of Abracadabra is beautiful. My vintage band gave me two beautiful blooms and died over winter.I would like to try growing it again. What is your experience with this rose? As always I appreciate your input.
Terry-your memphis music blooms seems to have nice stripes .Thanks for sharing the picture.I hope mine would bloom with stripes .

Abracadabra is not a mini. Patsy Cline has over wintered for me with just a heavier mulching come December.

Abracadabra is a mini-flora erroneously registered as a hybrid tea. (Just my opinion of it.)

I will throw in my 2 cents worth on a few of these. Confidence is an older hybrid tea variety in a sort of shrimp pink with a yellow base. It gets about 3-1/2 ft tall, has lots of flowers with a low to medium petal count, and is a blackspot magnet. Keep it sprayed.

Ivory Tower is a taller growing hybrid tea. I have had the best flowers in the fall. Mine isn't doing real well right now, but that is a problem due to too much shade.

Macho Man has some nice flowers, but they open too quickly. Plant is also a blackspot magnet. Keep it sprayed. Mine needs to be moved, also too much shade. It is not growing well at the moment.

Osiana is a florist variety. Osiana's color is to apricot what Royal Highness' color is to pink. In other words, looks like a soft apricot ice. Flower quality can be very nice. Flower production is not all that great. It puts out flowers in flushes, but there may be only 2 or 3 per flush.

Painted Desert ultimately died in my garden. It never did well. Flowers were an intense red-orange color, but they were small and few. I saw it also in Portland's Washington Park, but the flowers were small there also.

Wendy Cussons I have never grown, but I used to see it more commonly in rose shows in the Pacific Northwest. I haven't seen much of it out there recently, but it probably prefers a maritime, cool climate since it has British origins. I approach British-origin hybrid teas and floribundas with a bit of caution because they were bred more for a British maritime climate rather than a continental climate.

Of the roses I commented about, Ivory Tower, Macho Man, and Osiana, are currently in my garden and were all survivors of that bad Easter 07 freeze and are still in some stage of recovery. I hope they will all be okay, but only time will tell. I hope this helps a bit.

Osiana is very pretty, but I'll agree with bustopher that flower production isn't much. Mine is only two years old though so it might get better as it gets older. I love the light apricot color so I'll give it a long time.

CONFIDENCE is a nice rose, but doesn't bloom all that well. Blooms blow kinda fast, but in the early stage they are quite lovely.
FREDDY MERCURY is one I asked Cliff to root for me. He had a hard time with it. Got my little plant this spring. It's doing rather well. Had one bloom that blew pretty fast, but for its first one, I expected that. I also asked him to root TINA TURNER, but he's had a hard time with that one. Maybe now he's gotten some to make it. I hope so. I'll definitely want that one.
I also requested GILBERT BECAUD and LINCOLN CATHEDRAL. I hope those made it as well.
GOLDEN MONICA is one I got from him last yr. It's still small, but I still have it in a one gallon pot.
IVORY TOWER gets very tall, but the blooms aren't all that frequent to repeat. The color range is not particularly "ivory." It gets a lot of pink, yellow and apricot undertones.
LILY THE PINK is a monster of a grower. Gets as high as 7ft if I don't prune it down. The blooms are a lovely warm pink that can have perfect spirals in the early stage.
MACHO MAN is definitely a disease hound. BS and mildew both. But the blooms are pretty. There are better lavenders tho.
NORMA MAJOR I got from Wisconsin Roses a couple seasons ago. She's been a very impressive bloomer. Nice big very long-lasting blooms. But if you don't like the star-shaped quilled-petal look, you won't like her.
OSIANA is a gorgeous rose. I have it and MAID OF HONOUR next to each other, and I get them confused all the time. It's a luscious creamy apricot that reminds me of peach ice cream. Tall grower, but not a real great repeater.
PACIFIC BLUE is gorgeous when it does bloom, but that's not all that often.
PATSY CLINE I got as a rooted cutting from a forum lurker I used to trade with yrs ago. She's been a slow grower and stingy, and the blooms blow very fast.
Not sure which TICKLED PINK he's got. I have the florist one. If that's it, it's a really gorgeous rose. Beautiful long-lasting pink with yellow undertones. Usually has tons of blooms in each flush. Think it might have some scent.
TROPICAL AMAZONE is probably one of the best oranges out there. Excellent repeat, gorgeous deep orange blend of perfectly spiraled blooms. If you like orange you'll love it!
As for ABRACADABRA... Mine was from Carlton's and it's been a slow grower. Doesn't repeat that great, and the blooms are rather smallish as everyone says. Mine occasionally sends off a lighter-toned version in a lt red and yellow, or you might call it dk pink and yellow, I guess. The real blooms are so dark and almost unreal looking. I have it's parent HOCUS POCUS and it's so unstable, it almost always reverts back to BLACK BEAUTY, which is perfectly fine with me.

Dana, it's been quite awhile since I grew Abracadabra (Pink J&P version). If I remember correctly, it grew fine for me before I moved 8 years ago. Because of the extreme way I winter protected my roses, I really don't know how well it will survive our winters.
I do remember Patsy Cline was planted in an area where I couldn't use the extreme measures so I used rose cones and oak leaves on it. Others in the same area using a similar method survived but Patsy never made it. After repeated attempts, I gave up.
