Might they be Ligustrum japonica and Skimmia japonica 'reevesiana'? Just guessing...

I thought Camellias have alternate leaves, the larger plant here has opposite leaves. I'd say it is Ligustrum japonica, the waxleaf privet.

The smaller one could be Indian Hawthorn.

Both are commonly planted now at new houses. The ligustrum is actually an invasive plant in the southeast.

Thank you all for the ideas. I'm going to look up the names you mention and see what I can find out.

The smaller one looks like Indian hawthorn to me as well, and the larger one is Wax-leaf Ligustrum.
