Pumpkins would definitely be in the 'winter squash' category. If the squash in question has a very thick rind, ripens in the fall, stores for a long time, is not eaten with the seeds intact....it's a winter squash.

Funny, I did a google, too, out of curiosity and found pumpkins listed with the rest of the winter squash varieties, of which there are many.

As a side note, the problem with Google is that certain users get different results. They "guess" what each signed in user is looking for. I've no idea why my results thought I was obviously looking for something else. I love Google and the idea is a good one, but sometimes it's a fail for that very reason.

My regional extension agent, and other pumpkin growers, say if you want pumpkins to be ready for picking in October, you need to plant them the 1st week in July.
