I honestly don't know of any reason to pick off certain blooms. Yellow squash flowers are either male or they are female, both sexes being on the same plant but in different locations. You need both to make a crop! You know, the birds and the bees (bees, anyway) take care of the pollen swapping needed to set fruit. With bees and other pollinators dwindling in population, I'd sure leave as many male flowers as possible. Only the female flowers will produce fruit but can't do it without the pollen.

Get your seeds or young plants in the ground right away after danger of frost. Squash tend to produce more male flowers as it gets hotter.

For me, yellow squash has been a 'plant it and forget it' crop...until harvest time. In your part of Alabama, it might be different. Let's see what others have to say.

Hill-up some soil and plant them in hills. I'm not familiar with Pic N Pic, is it a vining squash or is it a bush type? I plant bush-type in hills about 3 feet apart. When the vines start to spread out and touch the ground, I put newspaper around the plant. This is supposed to help keep the squash borer from getting to your plant and it keeps the squash cleaner.

Unless your soil is very rich they will need some form of fertilizer, commercial or organic and as the temps get warmer they will need spraying with insecticide.
There are insects that eat the squash as well as the squash vine borer.

Thanks y'all for your input. Last year I planted yellow squash and I think I maybe got TWO the whole summer. Maybe this year (with a little help) will be different!
