Starting a kitchen garden in June

I'm moving to Alabama June 1 - which is wonderful on all levels except gardening! It's meant not planting at all where I currently live (where last frost isn't til the end of May) but totally missing the spring season in 'Bama!

I'm hoping it won't be too late to purchase and transplant a couple of tomato plants, and I can start some herbs.

Are there any other vegetables that can be started (or purchased and transplanted in June) that will still flourish?

Or do I just have to be patient and wait for a fall planting?

Any advice appreciated!

You'll absolutely be able to start your garden in early June. Soil temps will be great, the plants will love it.

Hope you love Alabama and enjoy the long growing season.

It's common to start warm-season veggies like tomatoes and peppers after the last frost (April), and then plant more every two weeks until June or even July. That way you get a nice steady harvest - new crops coming in regularly.

What you have to look out for is possible dry conditions starting about the first of June. Some years it approaches drought. Just water on a regular basis and you'll be fine.

Plant a few things like tomatoes and peppers to tide you over till August. Then you can go with a winter garden of many great things. Enjoy!
