I planted mine out last year,cut them back for winter,mulched very good & now they're coming back.The roots don't crawl everywhere but it's not necessarily a neat plant.There is some upkeep--picking up old leaves & flowers that fall.They are beautiful no matter where you plant them.I have my 300 foot drive lined with them :).

If planted in a shaded area they will lean out towards the sun and everywhere the stem/trunk touches moist ground they will root and spread. I like this quality, but it's not one you would appreciate so plant in full sun.

Brugmansia really like alot of sun....if planted in a shaded area you will most likely not get the abundance of blooms they are famous for.

My mother and I have been planting these for a few years. You should have no problem putting them in the ground. Just cover them up with mulch real well in the winter. They'll come back. My mom has one that comes back every year and keeps getting bigger. Last year, I know this Angel Trumpet was over 10ft. tall!!!
