I haven't seen them for sale locally, but they sound interesting! I did see a lot of heirloom tomatoes for sale at Andy's Creekside Nursery in Vestavia, but no ground cherries as I recall.

My husband remembers eating them by the dozens in his childhood years. I plan on making preserves but don't know how many I will get off of the two plants I have now. They supposedly last a while if store in their husks so this may help.

I have never tried them but am keeping in mind my husband also said he used to eat stalk of raw rhubarb as a child. He tried it again when we were in college and I would give anything to have a picture of his face!!!

I will keep you updated on how they (ground cherries)do here.

Excuse the ignorance of an old timer gardener, but what exactly is a gtround cherry? Some variety of small tomato? A low growing fruit? Or?
