Pruning/planting my life away!!

If it isn't the hollies, it's the hedges or the Ind. Hawthorne,or low-lying tree limbs or the azaleas, etc...which brings my question: how late into the season post bloom may azaleas be pruned as to not destroy next year's bloom? Is it solely dependent on already obviously set buds? Zone location (I'm in Auburn), or how can a clue be gotten from the plant itself?? And no, I do not shear them, but just generally and gently shape them. I have 42 huge, 17 yo Mrs. GG Gerbings and some have beautifully sported to a delicate pink. Any thoughts?
