I am not familiar with Oleander but Gardenia and Azalea will be just fine. Most anything except tropicals and some of those will survive in the right location. I overwintered Mandavilla by moving the container to nook between house and doorsteps and covering with another container. Tender plants can be heavily mulched or covered during coldest months. Where in N AL are you moving to ?

Oleander will not survive here in N. Alabama. I first learned of oleanders as house plants,however, and you may be interested in trying that.

I lived on the southern east coast (between Savannah and Charleston) for 22 years and know what you are going through. You have much to learn about the soils and climate here, but I think you will be very pleasantly surprised at the enormous number of plants that you will be able to enjoy. The doors are wide open!

Thank You for the response. I now think I will take cuttings from many other shurbs. We are looking at land around the Grant and Scotsboro area.

I have planted the Oleanders around the air-conditioner. Looks beautiful and hides the air-conditioner.

Hubby is shuddering at all the cuttings I am doing. But want to take the shurbs I like with me. Looking forward to landscaping a new yard.

Definitely bring some oleander with you. Here in B'ham, I've had four in the ground for about three years now. Two have been reliable die-back perrenials, however with the extremely mild winter we had this year one of them stayed green all winter long. My other two are "hardy red' that I bought at H.D.. I was skeptical when I bought them, but so far they've been true to their name.....low temps in the high teens have not fazed them one bit.
