I think that you will simply have to learn to live by that old adage, "when one door closes, another opens". LOL. Some chrysanthemums do well in the warmer parts of the state, but I think the other plants will suffer quite a bit. Microclimates are always interesting to experiment with, however.

Learning to work with coastal zones can be challenging, and gardening in a coastal 8b will be an eye opening experience.

I think you will be very happy with your gardening prospects in Mobile. I'm convinced that Mobile is the most beautiful place on earth during the spring! I live in the midtown area of the city and am constantly astonished at the number of brillant gardeners who live in the neighborhood. I am a gardening novice who lives in constant awe of their breath taking efforts. I believe that our local garden tour is this Sat. It is well worth the effort if you are in the area. Tickets can be purchased at the botanical gardens or at any of the featured homes(one is located on my street!)I'm glad to hear that you are moving to our fair city. I am also excited at the prospect of you contribution toward making our city a lovelier place.
